Because Americans are generally very ignorant of how other countries actually function or think. The ultimate level of this is Godwin, where all opposing countries are compared to Nazi Germany on some unreasonable basis. There's a lot more to Nazism than not liking Jews, it's a very specific ideology that is very complex. It's a thing Americans do where they like to simplify all ideologies so that they don't have to actually worry about the basis of them (for example, we literally teach in High School classes that Hitler wanted to kill anyone without blonde hair and blue eyes, it's hilarious).

"Wipe Israel off the map" is actually a very crude translation. A better translation would be something like "We want to redraw the map without Israel." "Wipe off the map" has connotations of destruction in English; the phrase actually used implies more a redrawing of borders.
