They're not a mistake they were deliberately created by humans for a purpose. But they're a dead end as a species (if that's the right terminology) because they cannot reproduce, there's never been a second generation mule. And all this being an odd justification to back up furry behaviour being rational and good for humanity because different species fucking each other is good for evolution or how it progresses or something ridiculous like that.
