Robots? Do you take them seriously?

So TYT did this story recently, about this San Francisco business that is deploying robots to keep away homeless people. The creator says that it will have a "commanding presence" and will work but I don't quite buy it. It doesn't look intimidating one bit. On the contrary, I see all sorts of ways it'll backfire instead and cost more money than simply having a cop or security guard.

Honestly, what is to keep someone from simply pushing it over, laying it down on its side, trashing it, or perhaps stealing it and using it for scrap after dismantling it? Do you believe that more lethal robots will eventually be deployed in a civilian setting or do you see the trend as less of a threat if the best robotics can come up with are "Roomba vacuum" lookalikes?

To answer th general question in the title...given my field of research, yes, yes I do. I do not think that using robots the way you described in the OP is a good idea. Ok these are more like moving traffic cameras. It is a bit more like big brother is watching and less like we will arrest you or whatever.

I honestly believe that more lethal robots will be deployed over time, as our technology advances so does our skill to make robots be stronger and more scary.

I take robots very seriously, this is simply the start. Before we know it we'll have weaponized government operated ones policing everyone. And don't get me started on AI.....

Nothing, and they're already doing it. Robots have been smashed, had feces smeared on them, and had hot sauce poured into the sensors so far, by my count. God bless the people doing that.

I will give a similar answer to this thread that I have given recently, yes I do. However, how you mention them in the OP only shows that I have the right to be concerned over them. Specially, if they are used for such purposes against humans.

I'm not concerned about advances in robotics. There's still a very long way to go before they become sufficiently advanced and widespread to cause any real problems, and whenever some new technology has caused unforeseen problems, people have always been quick to develop countermeasures.

Autonomous combat platforms are no exception. By the time they will become widespread, so will robot-killing devices.

Friendship is optimal when?

Robots are a good thing. We just need to adjust our economy and mentalities surrounding the distribution of goods before too much becomes automated.
AI needs to be handled carefully, but is also a good thing.

Cybernetics too provide the opportunity for transhumanism, though I prefer the FIO presentation of it.
Do you remember the 2012 election where Mitt Romney said Russia was the biggest threat to world peace and Obama and the Democratic establishment mocked him, mere years before they began arguing they had allowed US sovereignty to be usurped on their watch by Russia and this is why the other side was unfit to govern?
That's alright, neither do they apparently.

Yes.

They come for our jobs and would be the end of the middle class as we know it, forcing us to:

A: not give them AI and there for we can use them as tools, switching to universal pay.

B: give them Ai and risk restarting the middle class only that now everyone would be more poor beacuse why higher a human when a robot works better.

Or give them Ai and then use them as slaves. Fucking over the middle class and the robots.

An 100% automated society, in which absolutely everything is done by robots is improbable.
Also to say kinda creepy.

Speaking of which, I do not think we should be way too reliant on robots in the future. There are still traits in which humans perform light-years ahead of robots. We even give robots citizenship now for goodness sake. Even as a firm believer in human progress, I don't feel that is going to end well.

It's only improbable if we don't figure out true human level AI or if we do figure it out but end up being so completely brain dead idiotic about handling it that we don't do the proper thing and turn them into a hard coded slave race.

If we do figure it out, which I firmly believe is in the cards, and we are not idiots (which I hope we aren't) it becomes not just probable but awesome and desirable. After all, who does not want to live in a paradise catered to by an android slave race?

I do take robots seriously but more because I am a bit phobic of robots and future technology. I am a very "the old ways are better" kind of guy. These robots though yeah I'd probably just shove over, because screw them. The future is coming and it scares me.

That would be ideal. But I wanted to go with a broader definition because even if for some reason we end up not being able to get our perfect humanoid replica slaves just plain old industrial robots will do.
