One of my coworkers had to evacuate- her family packed so hurriedly that they forgot to pack clothes, even. This is really alarming. :<

National News Radio: A large-scale infrastructure project will soon be underway. During this time, for safety reasons, the island will be closed to tourists and foreign news agents. We do expect a minor loss in revenue due to this, but this will be greatly offset by both the long and short-term benefits of the infrastructure project. If your job is negatively impacted by the island closure, please send a letter or verbal message via courier to the Council so that we can add you to the list of beneficiaries of foreign aid.

I heard about a small brush fire in the hills around the El Sereno/Lincoln Heights border a few hours ago, but yeah nothing major over here.

I remember when I lived with Griffith Park right across the LA river, we'd see fires pretty close but never got evacuated.

Fire season in California is year round now. I suggest that a moat be built around the urban part of southern California. The cities might be covered in smoke but any fire won't cross an artificial body of water large enough. Instead of trying to control the forests, I say the fire departments only defend the cities.

Ur.... you do realize that a wind-driven fire can send embers sparking new fires over a mile from the actual fire front, thus making any such moat option absurdly impractical to implement, right? :P

Strange that New York is in the northeastern US, and has the money for flood barriers.

One of Rupert Murdoch's vacation homes supposedly got burned down in these fires. It probably doesn't matter to him because he has so much money to keep buying more real estate with but a major liberal has said- "if anyone deserves this more- it'd be him" because Murdoch is one of the people most responsible for the US and the world being so behind on even beginning to address Climate Change.

That would take a lot of water, for a place with precious little of it. Not to mention the disruption to the local wildlife.

I think we should be doing controlled burns, to burn off the dead and dry brush that makes these conflagrations possible. Those wouldn’t be feasible in already-inhabited areas, but it could keep an outside fire from coming in.

I figured that the plan for California has always been, to build massive desalination plants and get their water needs met via the ocean. The Pacific has a near infinite amount of water that can be used.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Even one desalination plant can cause pretty significant disruptions to the ocean if you’re careless about it, they’re expensive to build, and even after that they just don’t provide enough water.

The largest desalination plant in the nation, the Claude "Bud" Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant, cost 1 billion dollars to build, has maintanence yearly costs in the millions, and only provides enough water for 7% of the region I live in.

EDIT: Also, the Pacific Ocean may have a lot of water, but we’re limited to building on the coastline. Which is valuable for plenty of other things, too, but another issue is that it limits the size of plant you can build and the amount of water you can get from that ocean.

What California needs is some sort of statewide sprinkler system. It'll help with the droughts, too. Only downside is you may need to tap a few lakes.

You mean the lakes that were in critical condition up until very recently due to the massive droughts? Those lakes?

Again, controlled burns is the way to go.

So instead of draining the Colorado river, we'll be draining Lake Mead directly. This really isn't a good idea.
