Major Wildfire causes large evacuations in SoCal.

Postby Major-Tom » Tue Dec 05, 2017 12:20 pm

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-m ... story.html

Ventura County and Los Angeles County are both seeing some evacuations as 45,500 acres burned overnight in Southern California, with the Los Angeles Times saying;

"At least 150 structures — including at least one large apartment complex and the Vista Del Mar Hospital, a psychiatric facility — were consumed by flames, and many more were threatened."

December wildfires such as these are somewhat historic, as Santa Ana winds that cause wildfires tend to start fires in September/October and the warmer, drier months, as opposed to winter time. The fast moving fire is threatening much of Ventura County, and 27,500 people have been evacuated thus far.

I myself hope that these fires can be contained so another Santa Rosa sorta disaster can be avoided, and the LA area desperately needs another rainy and cool winter or else these Santa Ana winds could hypothetically bring more fires through winter.

And we're got the Creek and Rye fires to add to the list, though neither of those are anywhere close to the scope or loss as the Thomas fire. NorCal had its turn in October, guess now it's SoCal's turn. :(

EDIT TO ADD: And here's the CalFire incidents map.

isn't it always California's turn?

Even worse, and this is part of why the NorCal fires in October were so destructive is we had a very wet winter. That means loads and loads of new brush growth that dried out in summer, leaving a perfect storm of lots of fuel, low humidity, and very high winds. The local news is prattling on about how we haven't had this powerful a Santa Ana wind condition in ten years. Clocking sustained winds here between 30-40mph, with gusts to 80mph... you get winds like that behind a fire, and holy fuck.

Pretty much. It's looking like a hella dry winter here in AZ (although, to be fair, La Nina is a contributor to that).

Oh man, hopefully his commute home is AWAY from the fires, because with the 210 and the 5 closed, traffic heading thataway is gonna be a complete nightmare.

Thankfully, he doesn't live in LA, he just works outta Burbank a lot and flies back home to AZ.

Besides, isn't LA traffic always a nightmare anyways. :p

Well, there's normal bad traffic, and then there's "multiple major freeway shutdown" bad. :P And geez, Creek fire is playing catch-up on Ventura. It's up to 11000 acres.

Even where I am (a town at 7000 feet elevation), it has yet to snow. Average first snowfall here is early November, and it's just been sunny and dry so far this winter.

I am waiting for officials to blame some camper or motorist for "arson", if they can trace the blaze to a stray spark.

I would try to contain them with deep bulldozed trenches, and to hell with private property.

You've pretty much described wildfire containment 101 right there. That and laying out fire retardant lines out ahead of the fire front if you can predict its direction. (Difficult with the squirrelly winds right now.)

Given current weather conditions (sustained 20-40mph winds, gusts to 70-80, depending on exact location) it's unlikely arson. Santa Ana winds can turn an errant spark into... well, look at Ventura. Could be a spark thrown from a trailer hitch scraping concrete. Could be somebody's campfire that wasn't put out entirely. Could be a cigarette butt thrown out a window. Could be a downed power line. Could be arson, but that's far from the only possibility.

So in LA is this only affecting the West SFV or what?

I said in LA, not the suburbs :p

How is it already affecting San Bernadino

And how far east do the evacuations go in the Valley? I have friends in the Van Nuys area and San Fernando area but I'm hoping it's only by West Hills or something.

And obviously traffic problems are interconnected.

San Bernadino's got evacuations going from a new fire up there. Thus far Creek's evac zone is mostly Sylmar and Sunland, Thomas fire has a freakin' enormous evac zone all over Santa Paula/Ojai/Ventura... might be edging into the south end of Santa Barbara by now too.

According to the CalFire map, there is a mandatory evacuation zone along the east side of the I-210, from near Sylmar/I-5 southward to Crescenta Highlands.

Creek Fire is over 11,000 acres :(

The fires in San Bernardino appear to be very small (100 acres) and/or almost fully contained.

My thoughts go to those affected by fires, both this one and the other hundred that have been happening all over America.

Yeah, that's got a traffic messed up since the 405 northbound is shut down at the moment. Live news stream if anyone's interested. The Thomas fire is north of 65,000 acres up in Ventura, the Rye fire is 7,000 (5% containment) and tracking toward Simi valley, official sources have been saying the Creek fire is at 11,377 since last night, but I can only assume that one's crested 13,000 acres by now.
