Let's be fair here. No one even brought up the idea of using a baseball bat as an effective countermeasure. That's kind of why I'm fairly alright with tiny flying doom drones. It'd be a great way to relieve stress, and failing that... roll your windows up.

Well, part of the premise of the video is that they somehow figured out a way to coordinate swarms so they could blow in your windows and launch effective mass assaults.

But they can't do shit if we just have a bunch of other drones with robotic butterfly nets flying around catching them. :p

Life imitates art. ~Leader Megatron

It's just a matter of time before someone who is simultaneously a better coder than myself, and more insane than myself, makes this a thing. There are already proto-Autobots in the form of self-driving cars, and proto-Decepticons in the form of existing drones. I give it 10-40 years more of technological innovation before my favorite program (G1) is the real deal. But, while I will never be able to deny the cool factor of the whole thing, I don't think I'm going to like how that actually ends, especially since air really does beat ground - and the weaponized side will indeed be the one with the built-in air superiority AND the hardcoded idea that humans = targets.

I just hope they remember who has spoken so wonderfully of them on here all this time, with never a single badmouth...

(And yes, this is OOC, for anyone who wonders. I do think life is going to imitate art. It's already happening, and it's just a matter of time before it's all out of beta.)

Do I say these upcoming self-directed (oh yes they will be) Decepti-reals should be banned? I've never been one for pointless bans, and trying to ban a weapon type is pointless. Someone or other is going to make this happen no matter what the UN or whoever happens to think of it - same as happens with every other new weapon type that's worth developing - so a ban will only weaken whoever is foolish enough to obey it. Since I'm in the US, I say the developer might as well be the United States, so we can enjoy some easy wins before it all blows up right in our faces.

I like how I was able to deduce strong, effective countermeasures against this becoming a problem, to be implemented during programming... and it got completely ignored and buried.

While there are legitimate concerns about the automation of conflict, this came off more as one of the better episodes of Black Mirror and less like a hypothetical reality.

I mean, the only real difference between a drone and a pilot is where the "bombs away" button is. Same with AI kill bots, there's less buttons, but there's still a go button and a stop button.

The problem is not where the button is, but that there is technology being worked on that would remove that button entirely. Drones aren't the problem, autonomy is.

Yes, they are. Unless if the bots are given in-built GPS tracking device, we won't know who send them. Even so, I think bad groups will still find a way to circumvent this.

As it stands, some of this technology already exists and is capable of being used.

Look up something called Super aEgis II. It is a real life sentry gun capable of autonomously locking on to vehicles and human-shaped targets, and firing upon them. It was invented in 2010, and is used on the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. While it is reported that all customers have configured it to require human confirmation before firing... that is not the only configuration.

It would be entirely possible for someone to place this on top of a remote controlled vehicle, configured to fire without warning, and drive it through a city on a mass murder spree.

I don't ask that such technology not be created in the first place: that would simply be unrealistic. The tech already exist, and more will continue to be made. I simply ask that the human confirmation setting be the ONLY setting programmed on these things. While a terrorist could theoretically hijack and crack one of those things to put other settings on it, it would at least place more work on their end, and ensure that the ones NOT in terrorist hands be less likely to accidentally kill someone.

I'd rather we not reach that point to begin with? As far as I understood, the point of this thread was to discuss how to NOT reach that sort of point? Or am I perhaps missing something here?

This really isn't new, ever since we developed technologies which meant we didn't have to look someone in the eyes to kill them we've dreaded the idea that killing would become easier. The challenge presented by the slaughterbots video is one that's been answered time and time again. Efficiency prevails.

Well great, when the automation apocalypse comes and the rich don`t need our labor anymore, they will kill off the cops and the soldiers too.
Hopefully this might make the armies of the world rebel against capitalism, in stead of slaughtering the starving proletarian masses.
Probably not though.

The entire idea of the proletariat is founded on completely missing the point. It constructs a category of persons and then presumes a kinship amongst them. There are people and in the absence of capitalism or any other outside guiding force there are still people. People will find a reason to kill each other because natural selection was unkind to those who were slow to wage war.

So?
Yeah, hunter gatherers grouped around kinship and their small groups waged wars for resources(food).
Well the world has changed a bit since then hasn`t it!?
And capitalism is a force that directs people`s behaviour. And in its case, it divided people into rich and poor. We`re the poor, and we`re fucked.
