What is it about the car being driverless that will make the engineer go "oh, well, now the WiFi must connect directly to the self destruct button. Obviously" ?

Seriously?

Parallel parking is trivially easy.

It's the NOT getting run down by idiot wetware eating/reading/make-up-ing/tweeting behind the wheel that I'm mostly looking forward to.

What I want to know is when did companies start putting self destructs in cars?

The leet h4x0r5 will code one in while you're not looking.

Actually, when I was much younger, for the longest time, I thought that's exactly what the "hazard" lights switch was. Then I grew up and found out that you can scuttle a car with a bit of effort (far more effort now, with modern cars, though since the on-board computer can actively NOPE idiotic control inputs), even if not a particular button.

If a self destruct dosen't result in a impressive explosion, it fails as a self destruct.

(Note to self, in future check car for high explosives)

I think the only way for this technology to work is if everybody used it. It's like horse drawn carriages and automobiles being on the same road.

And the battery won't be user-replaceable.

The first generation will have regular tires, but eventually they'll come out with special Apple tires that are easier to damage and more expensive to replace.

Or just tires with no air filling tube. They can only be inflated over Bluetooth.

EDIT: Or with an AirPort (not included). Duh.

Come to think of it, maybe we shouldn't let Apple make cars.

Maybe we shouldn't let them make anything. Or put a tariff on their products for their sheer cheeky money grabbing.

They might need them just to move people around their gigantic Ringworld Death Star new HQ before the wagon teams run out of supplies and/or die of dysentery.

Ready or not, technology marches on.

Personally I'm in favour of them. People due stupid shit on purpose and it can't be helped, but bugs in programming can be worked on.

Parallel parking has been automated in luxury cars for years.

So I can either spend money I don't have, or wait a few years for computers to work their magic for proletarians like myself :p

Finally the goddamn BMW assholes will stop being jerks. Or maybe they'll go out of their way to be even worse now that they could drive like a normal person.

Nope. Machines are evil and too dangerous and will kill us all. Please ignore the millions and millions who successfully fly through the sky at near the speed of sound at near full automation, or are elevated up and down skyscrapers nonstop at full automation, constantly all day every day in near total safety.

Focus only on the occasional accident (except for elevators, cause they really are that absurdly safe) and generalize to doomsday proportions.

Engineering is still at the "banging rocks together" level, after all.
