The fallacy of paid prioritization lies on the word “prioritize”. There is no prioritizing web queries. Once the signal leaves a computer, it travels at the speed of light. You literally cannot make it faster.

What the corporates are offering, is instead of priority, they’re sabotaging your roads so that EVERYTHING is slowed down. Then they give the normal lane to the “prioritized” traffic.

Which wasn’t prioritized at all. It’s still traveling at the same speed.

Everything else is worse.

No one here wants to be as outlandishly outraged like you, because it's not gonna affect people as much as you think. You're overreacting, hyperbolic statements and links do nothing for us, except make us laugh at your childish rants and mock you for you inability to understand why we don't really give a damn, and your calls for revolution don't help your argument either.

This is not how it works. The average guy will still pay about the same, but they will have a much stricter or slower internet to access. It may not be obvious (e.g: Throttling competitors) but it will not be like the internet we have right now. Meanwhile, rich people will pay much, much more to access the real internet. This is how ISPs will make the extra revenue.

Give the ISPs enough time and they'll figure out how to cripple the net. This reform is still fresh but it was implemented for a reason.

They'll cripple the net because... they're bond villains? No, they'll adopt whatever pricing model they are allowed to do to maximize revenue less cost. And based on the results in the capital market - it doesn't look to me like many people outside a highly excitable group of young internet users is expecting them to be able to garner a whole lot of extra revenue (or less cost) from this change.

It won't be the "rich" that pay more for internet anyway. The "rich" are disproportionately over 50 who are less likely to be streaming and using the internet to its fullest anyway. My grandparents are much better off than I am after years of hard work - but if anything changes for them it will be that they're able to buy some sort of cheaper option to their internet. Because currently they pay the same rate I do every month and only use it to send emails (and they have a weather widget on their desktop that updates itself automatically). But they have to pay full price for the same internet service someone like me uses (a 20 year old that streams all the things and games online).

It will almost certainly be the people who use the internet for most of their entertainment that pay more (if anyone does) - people who just need to access informational text based sites aren't nearly as worried about speed. We could do that fairly quickly on stone-age dial up.

Those over 50 you mention in fact already have the means to get cheaper internet, with lower bandwidth for like 10€ per month. So no, that all people pay the same for the same access currently is just blatantly false as other, cheaper options DO exist, but alas with lower bandwidth of course and most likely the ISP package will also lack a telephone flatrate, typical price ranges here are as following:

30€ monthly for 16mb per sec internet + telephone flatrate

20-25€ for the same telephone flatrate + a lower bandwidth internet at 6, 10 or so mb per sec

15-20€ for 16mb internet flat only, no telephone flat

8-12€ for a 6mb internetflat, no telephone flat either.

Why do these old people not get a cheaper option then and pay for the full bandwidth? Do you need a 16mb gamer connection for sites like NS or emailing? No, you need it if you either game or stream, and frankly if they lack the foresight to choose a proper ISP package then frankly that´s not the fault of other consumers is it? Sorry that makes no sense at all to me. Nor is current net neutrality restricting ISP´s to offer same prices and same packages either. They are merely prohibited from FAVORISING websites or services and charging extra fees for full bandwidth of certain websites or webservices such as streaming, something i´m sorry but which is good.

Also next point or more of a question...

Since they can favorize and then have the freedom to do so. Tell me, what stops them from limiting their bandwidth for text only sites to ridicilously low bandwidth rates? Besides why wouldn´t they? They want to maxmimize profits and want you to pay them more for proper or what for us right now are "normal" internet speeds. Allowing them to favorize will inevitably sooner or later lead them to throttle many text only sites as well.

And next point: One should not underestimate text only sites either. Yes you could run them fairly quickly with a dial up connection, but it will already become critical for news sites or even websites like NS that use IMAGES which are known to be considerably larger. If the image is of high-res(plus depending on the actual size of it, it can easily range from 2mb to 30mb in fact), do you know how long it takes to load one freaking image? Do you really want to either pay like 5 bucks extra per month or wait 2-5 freaking minutes to load 1 image on NS? I doubt it. It takes minutes for a dial up connection to open or download a 5mb image already.

Well, it shouldn´t effect me sitting here in Germany anyway. However you should take the bigger picture into account, and the bigger picture is if you allow them favoritizing, they will sooner or later start massively slashing bandwidth for text only sites too, making it a hassle for people who don´t want or can afford high speed internet to ALL websites, to access NS or worse, even read their news online, you would effectively bar them from news sites and other stuff online. Nor is this a good thing for free media anywhere in the US, it will force many to centralize under bigger conglomerats under big ISP corporations, way to go to tear down the last bit of free journalism and news that America still has left.

Oh yeah lastly I should maybe also mention that many many news sites these days standardly have videos, and many "articles" even entirely lack an article but are merely a short video report you can watch online. Imagine wanting to get such a news article when your bandwidth is limited to dial up speeds, it will take minutes to load 1 freaking article that only lasts 1 and a half minutes...

You call it a luxury, which is often associated with a privilege for the rich.

Wrong again, I did not say it as a privilege for the rich, I say it is a luxury, meaning you have to pay for it as a luxury good that is not essential.

Yes we do pay for it. However, with paid prioritization it could actually become a luxury for the rich as they would be choosing winners and losers depending on how much you pay, pay, pay.

Try me. If it won't happen, why would those who can do it want the rules against it gone? Seems like saying removing rules against stealing wouldn't lead to more stealing.
