I don't take everything I read online at face value. I've been alive long enough to know how full of crap much (or most) of the internet is. But that, to me, is part of the problem. I think I can generally tell what's real and what's not (although I'm still not immune to mucking it up now and then), but others fare a lot worse than I do, and they fall for all manner of misinformation and extreme rhetoric because the internet is saturated with it, and even if the lies and extremism are just "ironic", they will still have an effect. They will affect people vulnerable to them, and those people will have to live in the real world alongside the rest of us while under the influence of those ideas. And that worries me.

And as for taking all "s***posting in good fun", in some cases I simply can't, because said "s***posting", even if it pretends to be devoid of any real meaning, will inevitably contain some meaning, some intent, some conditions of production underlying it, and those who read it will too derive meaning from it, with their own conditions of recognition. And when we know for a fact that genuine ideologues are aware of the effects of this, and interested in using it for the pursuit of their own goals, we have to take it seriously.

By all means, I will happily s***post back at the s***posters and laugh at the pathetic extremists, but that doesn't mean I will not also criticize the underlying ideas.
