Ah yes, one of the more successful religions in the world, right up there with Cheondoism and Hoahaoism .

It's almost as if extreme pacifism is incredibly impractical on a large scale (although tbf, I don't believe Jainism has ever strived to be the most influential or widespread religion) and just doesn't work outside of individual or relatively small group efforts, like monasteries.

Buddhism was spread without use of coercive violence and it's one of the largest religions in the world.

Somehow I doubt that no violence was involved at all.

Even so, Buddhist religious violence is a thing.

Oh, I don't dispute it's size. I find it silly that that's somehow important.
Salus Maior wrote:So I suppose that Jainism's success is derived more by its ability to survive despite being so small for such a long time, rather than population.

"Being so small for such a long time." ignoring the patronage it received from powerful south Indian kings and emperors.
Salus Maior wrote:India, of course, in terms of native religions/rulers has generally been open and un-oppressive so that's not surprising that any religion would survive there

Ashoka burning people to death and putting bounties on the head of Jain monks is totally unrelated, obviously.
Salus Maior wrote:That was more of a remark on how religions that claim to be pacifist or generally peaceful get around being pacifist when it becomes inconvenient.

To be fair, this is true. But considering this was the medieval age, I don't have a hard time believing that monks needed to use violence to defend nuns from sexual assault.

Not saying it's not a thing.

I'm just pointing out that the worlds second largest missionary religion spread without engaging in mass purging of heretics or holy war a la Islam or Christianity

Again, I doubt that no violence was involved in Buddhism's spread.

Most of Christianity's expansion was done through missionaries as well. Some of it wasn't, but I wouldn't even say that's the majority of the spread.

I would like to remind you all that, in the event of war, the President has the authority to suspend due process and order the arrests of any Americans deemed a national security risk, and that the FBI maintains a list of 110,000 Americans who can be arrested in the event of war.

He is if you read his works as a continuious wholes instead of mining them for quotes without context. He made it extremely clear that he should not be read in such a lazy fashion. He was in fact an atheist and saw the Gospel as mythical

Is that supposed to endear me to him, or make his quote less ridiculous?

It's funny how "I-it's out of context" is always the excuse; but rarely is there context provided to back that claim up.

Funny, that. Probably has something to do with it ending up with odd things like "Your will is in your dick" and "Intellect and animus are opposites".

The context is his comprehensive system of thought, The World as Will and Representation. His figurtive remarks are only to be understood in the context of his understanding of will, desire and ethics. What will is, what it does, what the world is, etc, which he goes into extensively.
