This just in: Trump defends Moore! Why? I hear you cry. Because Judge Moore said he didn't do it. What more do you want?

Mmm, Trump no doubt understands Moore's predicament well. He's forever denying things and nobody believes him either.

I think there's a really big gulf of behavior that falls between "okay" and "categorically disqualifying to hold government office." Plenty of senators and other government officials do things that aren't "okay" But IMO there are relatively few things that categorically disqualify someone from holding office.

Yes, but you know, it's the Caesar's Wife principle. Caesar had been elected Pontifex Maximus and his wife Pompeia hosted the Bona Dea celebrations, a very sacred ritual for women only. Publius Clodius Pulcher, one of history's bigger assholes, dressed up in drag and crashed the celebration. There was a huge scandal. Poor Pompeia, who had not been anything but a victim of Clodius, found herself divorced by Caesar despite her innocence on the principle that Caesar's wife should be above suspicion. The same thing should apply to our elected officials.

Elected officials should be above suspicion?

I think both of these views are naive. Politicians are corrupt. Period. They should be under constant suspicion, simply by virtue of being government officials. They are not good people, they are at best well checked necessary scum, and at worst monsters.

Aren't you a little young to be that negative?
Not all off them are that way.

You'll forgive me, I hope, but that's just edgy horse hockeys. If all politicians and government officials were corrupt and scum, there would be no civilization. They are good people, the vast majority of them, doing jobs that need to be done. Sorry, but I'm not drinking the "all politicians suck" Kool-Aid.

Why would civilization end if government officials were scummy?
