It very much is because the implication is that one is not a real republican and thus belongs elsewhere. Mitch is a conservative and thus belongs in the Republican Party as his politics determine his party allegence. We can argue how conservative he and if he's doing what's best for the party but to say he's not a republican because he's not as (or more) conservative if you is silly.

That's too simplistic a view of a very complicated world. You are missing the main feature on the "conservative" political landscape. Those continued and successful attempts to move the party further and further to the extreme right. The current perps, Steve Bannon's faction, is indeed saying either you get in line with us (Alt Right) or we'll primary away your seat. Sure, politicians that lose their seats are still Republicans, but without seats they are powerless. Same goes the other way.

If you haven't noticed yet politics is all about labeling people. And there are labels within labels. Think of a politician as a Matryoshka doll with labels for each inner doll. In this example, the biggest label is "politician" which holds all the other labels within it. So the next would be Republican. Inside that one you might find RINO or Trumpist, etc. etc.

This is the same culture that holds Purity Balls in which young girls are symbolically(at least, I hope it's just symbolically and not legally) married to their fathers so that the man in their life will protect their virginity until they are married. If anything we should be surprised that we didn't hear someone say this sooner.

And it looks like after some soul searching most Republicans are back to "anything is better than a democrat" mentality.
