History tells us that this assault is another significant mark in a long timeline of nasty, but short military encounters in what is widely known as the most fortified and sensitive border on earth. Technically speaking, the Korean war has never ended. I think nobody wants to finish it.

I was in South Korea the last time they sunk a South Korean ship.
well actually in Thailand flying back the day of, as I was coming into Inchon I could look out the window and the sea was literally filled with south Korean naval boats.

From the description it could just as easily have been a mine as a torpedo. Of course, NK would still be the prime suspect.

How is the DPRK going to cover up a torpedo attack off their coastline? If anything the RoK is keeping quiet about this in order to keep a panic from happening.

South Korea and the US is going to cover this up. It is not in their interest to start a war there.

Haven't you noticed they've been bribing and kow-towing the North Koreans for the last 20 years?

I agree, I'm sure SK is trying to cover this up or play it down. From the sounds of it, they might have lost 40 or so sailors, plus the ship. Theres no reason it couldn't be contained to the sea, Texas had an unofficial naval war against Mexico for most of it's history as a republic, but that didn't evolve into a land war.

I don't think you looked at the reality on the ground. The US and South Korea have been trying their utmost to pacify the North Koreans. Why? Because Seoul has too much to lose. It is within spitting distance of the North. In a fight, not only will it be inundated with refugees, the capital run the risk of being totally destroyed. This is the reason why there will never be a real war as long as the South can help it.

The North may keep on provoking, but the US and the South won't do anything drastic.

Not really Parthenon is quite correct there is nothing to stop a Shooting War from picking up right away. It is just a temporary interlude and at this point it is whoever blinks first that will start the shooting. This kind of daredevil provocation happens from both the South and the North.

Not really South Korea has been caught slipping people into the North. Not that long ago a Commando Expedition was caught by DPRK border guards.

I'm referring to your suggestion that "they will start shooting". Putting spies into the North is a totally different matter. The CIA has spies in Mexico and vice versa, that does not mean they will go into war tomorrow.

Armed commandos are not spies.

They're worse. If they're conducting military operations without declaration of war, they are worse than spies.

They are ... excuse me for using a bad word ... terrorists.

Actually there is a declared war.
They just have never officially declared peace.
It is why my service in Korea qualifies me as a veteran of a foreign war.
