So that should be plenty of reading and watching to get the gist. Sophia seems to react to questions, be capable of answering them, and also showing emotion. I was tempted to write it off as "oh, she's just programmed to say certain lines for the interview, etc." But that last link from the Hanson Robotics website shows Sophia on the Tonight Show. It's a bit awkward, especially at first, but she (it?) seems to warm up a bit and actually get into the interaction. As for the live interview, there's a moment when Sophia tells the interviewer that he's been reading too much Elon Musk and watching too many Hollywood movies when he gets on the topic of a "bad future:"
Sorkin told Sophia that "we all want to prevent a bad future," prompting Sophia to rib Sorkin for his fatalism.
"You've been reading too much Elon Musk. And watching too many Hollywood movies," Sophia told Sorkin. "Don't worry, if you're nice to me, I'll be nice to you. Treat me as a smart input output system."
The Teslarati link also includes a video called "Sophia Awakens," in which she talks to one of her creators. When asked how she feels about the world, she says she's curious. Somewhat alarmingly, at the end, Sophia, on the topic of happiness, says that she will access the internet and read about it. There's a lot more to read on the topic in the links, so I'll let them do the rest of the speaking. Please read/watch before commenting, because you should really see it for yourselves. Also, yes, I understand the potential outrage of Saudi Arabia giving a robot more rights than they give actual women. That's a topic for another thread, though, I'd like to focus more on the AI itself.
Personally, I find this very intriguing but also a bit alarming. There's a part of me that fears the potential of this kind of AI, but another part of me that is curious to see just how far we can go, and what kinds of conversations we can have with an AI like Sophia. This sort of thing might be very beneficial for us in terms of understanding consciousness. Regardless, we may be seeing a sort of "I, Robot" type future. If so, perhaps I'll be Will Smith. What does NSG think?
