Well, Tuesday was the first day of classes. Went to both - classes were cancelled yesterday meaning I didn't have to go to those two. Class this morning was cancelled but in about an hour and a half I'll return to my second Tuesday/Thursday class. The fifth class is only Mondays and Fridays and since Monday was MLK day, tomorrow will be the first day I get to visit that class.

Thus, two out of five classes attended this semester. Tomorrow I'll have gone to four of the courses out of five.

Ohhhhh right; that kind of thing.

Slipped my mind that the beginnings of semesters are like that sometimes. Except it was only with interdisciplinary classes. I think.

Colleague has some work he's been doing for years that technically could fall under either of our job descriptions, he's low-key been trying to pass it on for a while. He gets his info through talking to his various industry contacts. I'd have to look through and cross-reference a lot of documents to get the info. It's possible but time-consuming.

Last year I said I wasn't currently collecting the data and in a private meeting he responded by saying "what exactly is it that you do here then?" He's now asking me to another meeting with just him to discuss me finding out about a few cases, with more to come later, all of this to be reviewed on an ongoing basis, and eventually followed by a "wider review" which appears to be code for "making you do all of it". My boss told me a while back that any substantial new work I take on should come across his desk first. I've told him my concerns and asked him to come to the meeting.

Does this sound like I'm being fair, or am I being a "cc in the boss" drama llama that's going to get rightful comeuppance? The guy has kept it just about vague enough in writing that he could claim the initial meeting is just about a few small pieces of work and that I'm wasting the boss's time. He only talked about the "review" angle when I spoke to him.

Oy, so much to process. Anyone requesting you to work on something should be run by your boss. For me I do it as a courtesy. Cc and briefly discuss without bringing him to the meeting. Other places I have worked I would get a raft of shit for taking on work that was not directly assigned by him/her.

Is it weird to watch random clips of a show you never watched? I mean, I've never seen an episode of Entourage in my life. But I've spent like 10 minutes watching funny ass clips of that Ari guy. Do the same thing with The Simpsons. Never watched an episode, but I can kill a lot of time going a clip spree.

Technically equal in rank, but he's been there for years whereas I'm relatively new. He has a subteam manager he reports to directly, but that manager is herself under my manager.

He hands off work piecemeal so you initially accept the small amount because it's not worth making a fuss about. Starts off with a few "quick" and easy questions, but then rolls in with the supplementaries and keeps spamming slight variations of the same question back and back when you say the current reports don't produce the data he wants. Last time I ended up having three or four work days badly disrupted brickwalling his constant pushing when I twigged what he was looking for wasn't nearly as small as he initially made out and didn't want to go any further in the commitment without boss's say so who was on leave at the time. Boss is often away in meetings or otherwise unavailable - a further complication. He never asks when the boss is actually there, of course.

When I do say something I risk looking over-sensitive when the guy issues denials. If I don't I end up taking on more of this guy's work by stealth, backed up by his constant badgering from just behind me in the office, when my boss has already given me a bunch of other stuff I need to be doing.

So my design professor told us to make a design that uses 2 words in order to convey a meaning, everyone drew a picture, whereas I designed a logo using the 2 words, and yet mine was somehow terrible because of that.

I mean, I'm not arguing that the design wasn't half-assed in some areas (I'll flat out admit to that), but it being a bad design because it didn't do what almost everyone else did even though he wanted variety really bugs me.

You should watch The Simpsons, but stop after season 9 (And avoid The Principal and the Pauper).
