Joking aside though... do IQ tests really prove anything useful in this day and age? I imagine that IQ can be affected quite heavily by various factors including social class, education, and even upbringing. I've met some truly idiotic intelligent people, and some damn smart dumb people.

Actually, it's your comprehension that's lacking here. I stated that a student will struggle in college if they don't know how to cite their sources by time they enter university. Since you clearly know so much about the American system, you must understand that students graduate high school before they enter college. The implication is that any college-ready American student knows how to cite their sources, which they must have learned in a high-school setting or before. This negates your point that there aren't many high school English classes that require proper citation.

By the way, my university ranks higher for research influence than any European university. I know you wouldn't let facts get in the way of a good narrative though.

As a former academic with a US undergraduate degree, two UK postgraduate degrees, and a couple of decades of experience in the academic sector on both sides of the Atlantic (and Australia), perhaps I can add some nuance to this slightly odd debate.

It's probably fair to note that the mandatory 100-level intro courses in American undergraduate institutions are often designed to accommodate some of the issues inherent in your average American high school education by revisiting subjects that have often been taught poorly.

However, that doesn't mean that the entirety of US college is 'basically equivalent to high school'. There's a lot more variety in the American higher education system than in the UK system, and while community colleges and some of the weaker state institutions probably can be characterised as a glorified equivalent of an extended high school, this isn't true of most institutions. In the last two years of an undergraduate degree programme, an above-average American and above-average British institution offer comparable levels of education.

An American MA is generally worth more than a UK MA; most English and Welsh MAs only take a year, and you'd have to do something spectacular to fail. Oxford and Cambridge (and, I think, Trinity College Dublin; though that's not the UK, of course) hand out MAs to anyone who's been a member of the university for c.6 years without any further study at all; it's not a proper postgraduate degree. Confusing the issue further is that in Scotland's older universities, 'Master of Arts' is actually the name of an honours undergraduate degree qualification in the humanities and social sciences.

Doctoral degrees are roughly equivalent in both countries, noting that much depends on the quality of the university studied at. There are differences (UK doctoral students aren't expected to undertake any course work, and go straight into researching their topic), but the degrees from universities of similar stature are equivalent in quality.
