Richard Spencer and Modern Nazism: #NotMyAmerica

Postby Torrocca » Mon Oct 16, 2017 3:50 pm

Governor Scott has declared a state of emergency for Alachua County ahead of Richard Spencer's planned speech on Thursday on the campus of the University of Florida.

In my opinion, this is a good move on the Governor's part, and a shit one on Spencer's part. I'd rather not see a Nazi in my home state, and I'd much rather not see another bout of violence caused by a Nazi. I've always been politically against Nazis and Nazism, and against really letting them spread their Nazism. I'm also, frankly, concerned about the well-being of several of my friends at the University. So, again, I'm entirely in support of Governor Scott's measures here.

What are your thoughts, NSG?

EDIT: Edited to more appropriately fit the ongoing theme.

Good on the governor. Hopefully he preemptively orders up the national guard in case things go south.

No, hilarious; he's ginning up controversy which will be the one thing that actually causes trouble.

While I'm all for diversity of opinions in universities, really have no idea what a Neo Nazi populist is supposed to contribute to an academic setting, besides maybe giving protesters something to do. Glad the governor is preparing in advance for the storm.

Look at Scott actually doing something right for once. Almost broke the political nicknaming rule there :P It's just very rare that I've actually heard him called by his name XD

Terrorists have most things planned in advance. There will be a knee-jerk reaction to this.

So we shouldn't be prepared and take any precautions because it might upset some feefees?

I think he should have let him speak. Even though he's a Nazi free speech is important, but I see why seeing what happened in Charlottesville.

Sadly, at that, knowing how these Neo-Nazi and White Supremacist rallies usually go.

It should be the university's call, not the governer's.

The university's already spent $500,000 on security. The Governor's likely called the SoE in case they need a rapid response for violence.

Sure, let the asshole speak. Free speech and all, yes? But, Rick Scott is being smart with these preemptive measures, for certain.

I'm fine with it then. We all know how protests usually go, especially in the South.

If there was any way at all to handle this in a less obtrusive manner then that's what Scott should have done. In any case the guy should have the opportunity to speak. Civilized people do not demonstrate that their adversaries are incorrect by silencing them, to quote an old man speaking through an imaginary person "when you tear out a man's tongue, you are not proving him a liar." The hard light of day and the knife fight that is the market place of ideas cleanses the world of unworthy opinions fashioned in smoke filled basements underneath gun shops.

Scott isn't not allowing him speak, he is simply taking caution for when Spencer does speak.

What happened at Berkeley when Coulter and Milo tried to speak was actually quite bad, and the anti-free speech college kids sure didn't help. Scott is merely saying "we saw violence there, let's make sure that when a controversial figure speaks, he has the freedom to do so but precautions are in place."

That is reasonable.

I'm aware of that, I was saying that the least obtrusive option would be the best one and I'm not sure placing the county under a state of emergency was necessarily that. If this was the absolute only way to get adequate security then fine.

Ehh, I think all it entails is that police presence will be amped up and on high alert. We saw what happened in Virginia, so precautions are necessary. So long as Florida doesn't go full Berkeley.

It's Spencer knowing how to get publicity. Universities are public places, so they can't usually bar a speaker from appearing. Spencer and company also don't have to foot the bill for security because the university has to cover it, and perhaps most of all having it at a university guarantees that they get ample counterprotestors and attention.
