A lot of the “black” people on here might identify as mixed-race, which would be more in line with the actual ancestry of African-Americans. I’m surprised there are more Native Americans in the poll than black people.

What it takes is majority, and striking resemblance. Most REAL asians look quite a bit alike. Russians are white, Indians and Arabs (note that arabic people come from a variety of middle eastern nations) are big enough and different enough from everyone else that that is enough to define them.

Easiest way to tell is by asking yourself who all gets confused with who. There aren't a lot of people that can differentiate chinese/japanese/korean/vietnamese/thai/etc., which is why using the general term 'asian' is easy enough that it doesn't offend people that you don't know where someone is coming from.

You could argue (as you have) that asian refers only to people from the asian continent, but you never hear of anyone calling mexicans 'americans' even though they CLEARLY are from the americas, right?

What chink joke? And plenty of people call Mexicans "Americans". The US doesn't have a monopoly on that phrase. The Spanish word for someone from the United States isn't Americano, rather Estadounidense (from Los Estados Unidos).

Asian is generally used to refer to those from South Asia in much of the UK.

Asia originated as a term to mostly describe what we now know as West Asia, but also the areas of Africa east of the Nile.

Really, whether in terms of looks, religion, or history, there's nothing that Asians have in common, apart from being on Eurasia and not being white Christians. The term was not invented by Asians but was rather imposed upon them by the West.
