I suppose that is true, I don't know much Spanish at all so I couldn't speak to that. In other race-related discussions and events etc. that I've attended that's generally the term used. I don't know if it has something to do with nonbinary genders or maybe if people formulated a strong argument for Latinx over Latino but that was the reasoning that was given to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I'll look into it.

With the amount of ethnically Austronesian speaking-peoples here who don't fit into the 'East Asian' or 'Pacific Islander' options, I think maybe a new option for the poll, 'Austronesians' could be added to fit Filipinos, Indonesians, Malays etc. @OP

Yeah, I feel that. I think it's difficult because the modern common definitions of race are just not good. The transition of people through the middle east all the way to the Pacific Islands was gradual and trying to box them out into concrete races is kind of ridiculous. I'm also Filipino, and in my experience Filipino is generally considered to be Asian rather than Pacific Islander (I guess we're more closely related to the south Asians than to Pacific Islanders apparently?), but in any case it's not as though most non-Asian Americans will really understand or care about the nuances in Asian identities.

As an iranian myself i don't we can be categorised in either of these. persians are persians that's it.but out of obligation i always choose middle eastern over white because our motherland is in the Middle East

I think that it's also important to remember that race is not really your skin tone, but rather your specific racial identity. That is, a very tan white person and a very pale white person are still the same race. A half-black half-white person who doesn't look black at all is still half black. Being a very dark-skinned Indian does not make you black. You have heritage based on the race you are and claiming racial heritage from other races just based on your skin tone is kind of offensive.

For example, I live in America and I'm part Filipino, but I look essentially Hispanic. I grew up in what used to be a majority Hispanic neighborhood and I've had people come up to me on the street and speak to me in Spanish because they assumed I'm Latino. Now, although I may look Latino, the historical treatment of Hispanic people in America is very different than the treatment of the Filipino and Ukrainian communities to which I belong. I am half Asian, half white, and to claim that I have Hispanic identity would be unfair to those whose true Hispanic identities have historical and modern social connotations that my identities do not.

In a perhaps more extreme but clearer example, a very dark-skinned Indian man in America should not identify as black because his heritage as an Indian-American is different than that of an African-American - namely, his ancestors were almost certainly not slaves and he is not still experiencing the effects of that historical heritage as Black folks are.

Although I may be, for the most part, Malay, I've only quite recently found out that I'm more diverse than I thought I was.

Looking through some family trees and history, I actually have Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian and even Arab ancestry.

We are definitely neither of those. The Turks were simply temporary invaders and we are definitely not Arab. Kind of a shit thing to say.
