Not sure if this has ever been done here before, but the "Is it racist?" thread made me wonder exactly what kinds of ratios we have here between different races, especially between white folks and POC.
Some of the poll options may seem a bit unorthodox; the interest here is more focused on social interactions between various races on these forums than any stricter biological definitions, so technically the question is more "Are you a person of color or not, and how do you identify?"
Feel free to discuss if you wish – since the poll is anonymous, there's no pressure to share any of your identity or to get into discussion, but if you want to, then go ahead. If you are so inclined, I think it could be interesting to hear some opinions on the race ratios on these forums and how they might affect our discussions of race-related issues.
Personally, I live in America where race relations are tense most of the time and white people are a clear dominant majority - whether or not you consider that a bad thing, it's the truth - and I wonder what those of you from America have experienced here and especially what those of you from other countries (perhaps where white people are not the majority) might have experienced.
If you do choose to join the discussion, just some basic guidelines and things to remember:
- Don't be racist*
- Remember that you can speak your mind but that anyone else has the right to refute you
- Keep an open mind and you just might learn something
- Do not speak for the experiences of other individuals or for identities that are not your own, and
- Do not expect someone to answer for their entire race
- Don't dominate the discussion please, especially if you and people backing you up on anything are in the majority (if we don't get to hear from every perspective then there's no point)
- If someone tells you you've done/said something racist or otherwise offensive, especially if you are in the majority (either on here or irl), stop and consider what they've said seriously before furiously typing a rebuttal.
- If you're stating opinion, make sure that you do it as an opinion and not a statement (e.g. "I think America is the best country", not "America is the best country")
- This is a discussion, not an argument.
*If you are racist, or want to share an opinion that could be construed as racist, consider whether it will have any constructive impact on the discussion. If it's something people can discuss, go right ahead, but don't post racist rhetoric if it's just going to break down the discussion.
