What is More Important, Your State, or America as a Whole?

So my friend and I were talking about the civil war and states rights, and he went off on a tangent about how times were different back then, and he was saying how an individual's state where they were from was more important than America as a whole. He was particular talking about Lee, and keep in mind, my friend is very pro confederate and states rights. I've known this for years, and we have had discussions over this for years too. But this time, he was really emphasizing states rights, and he loves our home state of Texas quite a bit. So I finally asked him, which is more important to you, America as a whole, or our state of Texas? He said that for him, it is easily Texas. He explained his reasoning as life changes and real governing happened on a state and local level, and he feels as though the federal government is almost useless. I said by far and easily America, our nation that must remain united as one, we have come too far together as AMERICANS to just trash the idea of this country, as well as the unity, support, and essentially interdependence that has made us one country over the years. We are stronger together as Americans, and we are essentially so intertwined with each other, that we would not do nearly as well on our own as 50 independent states. So what do you think NSG?

I, and most of the world, have no great love for America as a cultural/political entity. For one, it'd be quite easy to amend the OP to state "your state or your nation as a whole" but for some reason you chose to make this thread entirely American specific on a global forum.

Because most people here are American, plus this was a talk with my friend mostly about America, and our culture and history of our nation and our states (no pun intended). It's just imo, this is primarily about America, none the less, I still put options (just secondarily) for other nations.

In fact, the "full faith and credit" language seems to be often honored in the breach.

Reinhold Niebuhr, in Moral Man and Immoral Society, makes a strong argument that the larger and more inclusive a political collective is, the more unethical it becomes. I think history gives us many examples of this.
