As someone who helps out at a Scout Group in the UK, I never understood the issue here. I help out with the 8-to-10 section, and about a third of our group are girls. I see no problem with that, and thus I never got why Americans have issues with it.

Here since you can't seem to understand: I don't give a flying donkey fuck. I don't care if it's redundant, it works. Redundancy works pretty nice and happens to give us a lot of choice.

Maybe you should read mine sometime?

It's stupid and gives absolutely no benefits, and you can have strictly more choice without it.

Nah. "In a tent, on a narrow roll-mat with six other people" is the very last place where anything is going to happen.

Read my lips: "I. Don't. Give. A. Fuck." I don't care if you think it's stupid, it works quite fine here.

(Eagle Scout here) I'm sure this has been reiterated a hundred times by now but it kinda makes sense. Girl Scouts are miles behind the Boy Scouts as far as activities and prestige. I have a friend who did GSA and eventually quit because she was frustrated that her troop (or whatever they're called in GS) never actually did anything.

Of course, not all troops are equal so I'm sure there's plenty of Boy Scout troops which are equally inactive, but for the most part I'd say this would be a good option for girls who want something more than what your average Girl Scouts organization offers.

Also don't forget that Venture Scouting exists, which is a co-ed version of BSA which ranges from ages 14-21. Honestly it's quite similar to the Boy Scouts except obviously you can stay in it longer, and they focus more on doing bigger activities and there's not really a ranking up aspect to it as far as I could see. Really having girls in the Boy Scouts would sort of be like making them more like Venture crews. Again, I think this would be a great opportunity for girls who want to have the prestige and ranking aspect that BSA offers.

Although this will probably result in about a million more safety flyers and handouts and paperwork due to the co-ed nature if this becomes a full-on thing. Also the naming situation is totally ridiculous. :p

Again: it gives strictly less choice. You have exactly four options:

BSA
Venture Scouts
Explorer Scouts
Sea Scouts

With my proposal, you have all of those, and whatever the hell mixture of them you like. That is: vastly more choice.

And, incidentally, since you're claiming that this system works, I'd like to ask which of the above you are actually actively involved with, because everybody that I've spoken to who is actually involved with it thinks that the distinction is stupid.

Ive been involved with both BSA and Venture.

Also your proposal doesn't give you any choice

Beaver Scouts 6-8
Cub Scouts 8-10.5
Scouts 10.5-14
Explorer Scouts 14-18
Scout Network 18-25

For a 14 year old kid you have only have one choice, maybe two. While with the BSA you have four. And last time I checked 4 is more than 2.

Also we did plenty of water activities in the BSA. The Sea Scouts are more about sailing and shit, not general water activities

Giving it more labels is not more choices. With my option, you can do whatever the fuck mixture of the four US options you like, including any single one of them. Last time I checked, "basically infinite" is more than 4.

Does this principle apply to organizations in general?

Giving it more labels is not more choices.

They are four different options.

No you can't, unless you fucked up attempting to explain it.

Because it seems to me that you have an age limit on each. There is no way for a 15 year old kid to do both Scouts and Explorer Scouts according to your plan:

Beaver Scouts 6-8
Cub Scouts 8-10.5
Scouts 10.5-14
Explorer Scouts 14-18
Scout Network 18-25

Ignore the names: they do not match the current US names. These are just names for age categories (they are the current UK ones), each of which contains all of the above options, and more.

Nah. "In a tent, on a narrow roll-mat with six other people" is the very last place where anything is going to happen.

First, at least in my troop we generally had two person tents, which does allow for possibilities. Second, there are 24 hours in a day and 6 to 8 of them were spent in the tents. As to the rest, there can be quite a bit of privacy in the woods.

Probably because the Guides actually do stuff.
