Did you sell really small portions of popcorn, or did some poor bastard have to lug around a huge bag of popcorn with you all the time?

Probably also depends on how much money the buyer was willing to fork out for their shitty popcorn.

To be fair, I thought the chocolate covered popcorn variety was actually pretty solid. Everything else was mediocre though.

Chocolate is chocolate, of course. But there are tons of others varieties, like cheese-powdered popcorn I think?
Caramel, chocolate. I think everything else has a very small pool of fans, and even caramel/chocolate popcorn has a small pool of fans too, it seems like.
Whether the Scouts are in it for the money or not, there are alternatives to popcorn and they should be looked into. If they're worried about 'manliness', then they should take a second look at the big tins popcorn comes in. It looks like a damned Hallmark Christmas card to be painfully honest.

Now you're onto something.

Peanut butter fudge. Chocolate fudge. Peanut butter/chocolate fudge. All the other kinds of fudge that probably taste better than the best-selling popcorn type. Might teach entrepreneurship.

I knew a dude once, damn near financed that troop on his own with popcorn alone.

GSA made the wanky move of phasing out all the usual camping and stuff about 20-30 years ago. Now it's all about talking to people and research. You can get a camping badge and not even camp.

This will be a wake up call for them. Even the girls in my wifes troop like what the boys do more......

Building fires and whittling OR sewing and making exquisite omelets?

Cooking is an Eagle required Merit Badge now. I make no claims about exquisite omelets, but you have to write a full weeks worth of meals, figure out the cost of it all, and cook 3 or so meals iirc.
Boy Scouts have been working their way towards adding additional skills.

Yes, meal planning. Not so much the roster (although that does happen on actual campouts).
It has to be nutritionally sound as well.

Actually cooking food is required though, so it isn't all leadership.

I'm pretty sure that's been a merit badge for 20+ years, as those requirements are real familiar...

It has been a merit badge, but they slightly changed it and made it necessary to get Eagle in... 2014 or so.

The Boy Scouts of America announced plans on Wednesday to broadly accept girls, marking a historic shift for the century-old organization and setting off a debate about where girls better learn how to be leaders.

I'm all for equality and all that good stuff. But this whole thing is just assinine. For cripes sake, the organization is called the BOY Scouts. I know girls can do everything guys can and all that, but certain things should still be boys only. Hell, girls have their own scout thing.

What do you all think of this?

For, the problem lies is that the Boy Scout is not accepting girls in their scout-group even though there are already gender-neutral scout. I am a scouter from Malaysian's Scout Association and we have three type of scouts ; Boy Scout, Scout and Girl Scout. I am on the idea of making a gender-neutral scout but for letting girl in Boy Scout should not be advocate as it is as if letting girl enter a boy-locker.

Scout in my country is not all about leadership, but all about maturing whilst leading. We have a few skills which are optional.

I had to get this for my Eagle a couple years ago. It was at camp so it was easier since it was done in a group setting, my group made a mean Mountain Man with fucktons of cinnamon as the secret ingredient.

Aren't BSA and GSA wholly separate organizations?

Yes, but we aren't talking about the GSA in any way. We're talking about a reorganisation of the BSA's internal structure, by scrapping the separate Venture/Explorer programs, and just having one program, with all of the options in it.

Because it is an organization made for boys. Once again, the Boy Scouts of America.

Which is, itself, a branch of the original Scouting organisation, which had girls from the very start.

Ok? There's no free will reason for the Boy Scouts to include girls.

Yes there is. They made the decision entirely on their own, with no external pressure (unless you count pressure from WOSM, which really shouldn't be called "external").

Hakons wrote:
Ifreann wrote:So girls in the Boy Scouts wouldn't hamper scouting in anyway, and in fact already happens.

So...what, does it freak you out that the name isn't totally accurate? Change the name then.

Presumably because you didn't live in Ireland when the CBSI was a thing. That was a scouting organisation. It sounds like you're in a cult.

I'm mad because the Boy Scouts just casually throw away the entire purpose of their organization to appease people that will never send their kids into the organization.

Baden Powell Disagrees.

The name is wildly inaccurate. If they want to become America Scouts, or something, they can go ahead and do that. Naturally, the organization will drop in membership and doners, and another American institution will be lost to modernism.

Because that's exactly what happened when The Boy Scout Association became The Scout Association, right?

Oh wait, no. That reversed declining numbers. Just like this will.

Montchevre wrote:
Hakons wrote:
The BSA has no obligation for "gender equality," since it's supposed to be an organization for one gender.

The country has an obligation for gender equality. If you had read all of my post, you would have noticed my explicit statement that this is bad and that girls should be in the GSA or in venture scouts.

Why? Why do you like segregation?

Hakons wrote:Yeah, I now see the inconstincies in my argument. Still, I find the accusations that I was a reactionary trying to go back to the Boy Scouts of 1910 to be ridiculous and unbased. As my first post in this thread said, I believe the boy scouts should be for boys, and I reckon the majority of boy scouts, not to mention girl scouts, agree.

You are almost certainly wrong.

Sincerely, one of the Patrol Leaders that voted in favour of allowing girls into the UK Scout Association.

Pope Joan wrote:Will this be bad news for the Girl Scouts?

i am in the Lions club, and when my wife was also accepted as a Lion, the rival Lioness' organization openly resented it.

Either very good or very bad. If they try to continue as they are, then it'll be bad. If they do what the UK GirlGuiding organisation did and completely revamp their program to compete properly, then it'll be good.

Running Scouts like a business is probably the greatest threat to scouting. That brand of cancer has started to affect the BSA recently. The council whose camp I used to work for got infected by it a few years back. They completely gutted the camp's traditions and culture so they could cut costs and increase profits. It wasn't enough that our camp made money, it needed t make more money and thus everyone experienced staff needed to be purged and replaced with a private company run which promised to run the camp for cheap and make the council loads more money than it already was making. Shit like that is the real thing dragging scouts down. The genitals of the orginization's membership don't matter in the least.

The fuck? Ours are run to break-even, by requirement.
