No, history is not endangered in the slightest. You can still read up about Gov. Broward's achievements (positive and negative), and I'm frankly uninspired by the practice of immortalising famous people in stone or bronze in the first place. Perhaps it's my borderline-iconoclastic Irish Catholic upbringing, but I prefer human accomplishments to be honoured in words, not metal. At least you can choose to read or not read the words!

Having said that, I could support a compromise such as housing all such in designated areas or designated buildings, preferably ones related to the cause of the subjects' fame. For instance, a statue or bust of a former Governor would be appropriate to display in the Capitol buildings (s)he acted as Governor for. But a courthouse? Seems a bit...off, to me, to display a politician's bust or statue there!

The monuments in question aren't being destroyed, though, just removed and put in museums, for example. And in the case of characters like this Florida governor or Confederate traitors, it is as far removed from "hatred of the Occident" as you could get, unless you think white supremacism is an ideal that represents the spirit of the Occiden.

Statues aren't history, they're memorials with the clear intention to glorify people who fought for slavery, and were often erected with the explicit intent to honor and justify racism in the South. Not something we want to keep around. Here's an idea, we keep all the history in textbooks and museums where they've always been, tear down the statues, and replace Confederate statues with ones of monuments of the darker side of slavery or famous African Americans during the war?

In a more general wording, why not take down the objectionable memorials and replace them with not those? Thataway, history which was never in danger is still fine.
