In protest, we need to construct a massive bronze statue of this governor, a la the Colossus of Rhodes, but resistant to natural disasters. Why? Why not?

America already has a colossus. It's in New York.

Napoleon Bonaparte Broward was governor of Florida from 1905 to 1908 and was a unapologetic racist and also pushed for the draining of the Everglades. Broward County in Florida is named for him and there is a statue of him in the county courthouse bearing his name.

I do not disagree that statues of Confederate generals should be removed and placed in museums. Many of them were put up during the era of Jim Crow as a form of intimidation. Some were even donated by KKK members. Furthermore Traitors should not be honored in public squares. This however is going to far in my view. The man was governor of the state not a Confederate general. I wonder if some will decide later the county should be renamed. I think some people are taking the statue controversy way to far and it almost seems like they are trying to act as if certain parts of history never happened.

What's your take on this NSG? Is the statue controversy going to far?

-shrug- Statues of racists get wrekt. I don't see why his being a Confederate officer is relevant. He was a racist.

So long as they aren't trying to sanitize history, I see no reason not to take it down.

George Washington was a racist, take his statue down

Thomas Jefferson was a racist, take his statue down

Teddy Roosevelt was a racist, take his statue down

They're racists, aren't they? Doesnt matter what they did for this country, theyre racist!

American history and uncomfortable and full of injustice. Keep in mind this is the country that has only for barely 50 years now treated non-whites as people under the law. Some don't like to be reminded of their ugly heritage.

Question here, on what grounds should we dedicate a statue to someone?

If the people today don't feel like the man is worthy of reverence and glorification, they are within their right to remove objects meant to glorify him. The decisions of one generation can be overruled by those that succeed it, and that includes who a society holds up as worthy of admiration and commemoration.

Hypothetically, if the vast majority of the American people one day collectively decided that the Founding Fathers are no longer worthy of reverence, they would be well within their rights to try and remove each and every monument in their name.
