Would Mechs be a practical war weapon.

Postby Eisen Wolf Reich » Thu Oct 05, 2017 1:36 pm

Plain and simple, would mechs (Gundam, Super Robots or whatever you call em.) be practical weapons to use in warfare?

I would say it would sort of depend on the size of the mech, if one were to be say 1 story tall, and be humanoid then I could see it being feasible only because it could move and hide and run and climb like a human, making integration into armed forces easy. It could carry and fire weapons like a human, move cargo etc.

On the other hand, multi story tall mechs like in pacific rim seem kinda ridiculous to me.

Whats your opinion guys?

Mechs have a lot of trouble with the square cube law.

Like everything, but especially bipedal machines.
Venicilian: wow. Jesus hung around with everyone. boys, girls, rich, poor(mostly), sick, healthy, etc. in fact, i bet he even went up to gay people and tried to heal them so they would be straight.
The Parkus Empire: Being serious on NSG is like wearing a suit to a nude beach.
New Kereptica: Since power is changed energy over time, an increase in power would mean, in this case, an increase in energy. As energy is equivalent to mass and the density of the government is static, the volume of the government must increase.

Giant mechs are awesome yet usually impractical to the point of absurdity.

They're good until there's a weapon to surpass them.

having them as mobile artillery makes the most sense, but tanks can already fulfill that role somewhat.

I feel like use of them would start out similarly to the introduction of tanks and landships in World War I. They would be impractical and malfunctioning at first, but after further development they would actually be useful in combat and perhaps widely used by various militaries.

They'd be wasting your tax payer money for a piece of artillery on 4 legs. Doesn't sound too good tbh.

I mean, that's also true of a Mech the size of Mars. The thing is that stronger materials are costlier, and a mech is a lot less practical than a wheeled machine that's lower to the ground.

Depends on the design. Something with legs would be useless, because those legs can set stuck anywhere and is much harder to move and use. Also a well placed explosive would take you out of commission. Also the bigger you are, the bigger the target. However, they can be very useful off the battlefield or behind in support roles,of moving ordinance and other cargo. Imagine one guy picking up a stuck humvee or tank out of the mud like a kid with their toys.

There are very limited circumstances in which a mech would provide some tactical advantage that a normal armoured vehicle or infantry soldier with a heavy weapon wouldn't provide. On top of that, such vehicles would be incredibly expensive and complex to build and maintain. In the very far future, while we may well have the technology to construct more practical mechs, other advancements will have likely rendered the idea obsolete.

Well, the government is already wasting my tax money on it's over bloated military (And I have talked to several soldiers, sailors, and airmen, most of 600+ billion goes to unneeded equipment), why not do something fun with it?

By mechs, I think we mean walkers? Like, with legs?

Have we all watched The Empire Strikes Back?

I think that film demonstrates why walkers are a crappy, crappy idea.

I would imagine that tanks would do their job better. that, and smaller, more mobile autonomous robots that trade the human for more rockets and cannons.
Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

So, things with legs. Return of the Jedi had the AT-ST's. I think the Ewoks - you know, the cuddly bear-folk - stretched a wire between trees to trip them.

Still not convinced.
