Major Earthquake near Mexico City

Postby Gig em Aggies » Tue Sep 19, 2017 11:35 am

Saw this on MSN
breaking news major earthquake near Mexico City details to follow

story from MSN:
MEXICO CITY — A powerful earthquake jolted Mexico City on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway sickeningly on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that did major damage to the capital.

The extent of damage or injuries was not immediately clear, but people fled office buildings along the central Reforma Avenue.

Mexico's seismological agency calculated its preliminary magnitude at 6.8 and said its center was east of the city in the state of Puebla.

Pictures fell from walls and objects were shaken off flat surfaces. Some people dove for cover under desks.

Earlier in the day buildings across the city held preparation drills on the anniversary of the 1985 quake.

My OP______

Seems like the Americas just can't catch a break from Mother Nature with 3-4 hurricanes and now earthquakes. My opinion will expand when information becomes available. With my reading the available story on MSN I can't believe this quake happened on the anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City Quake and hopefully theirs no deaths since they were practicing for an earthquake anyways so hopefully Mexico City got Lucky.

Welp, it's official. Earth is trying to kill us.

Where are the space agencies at on sleeper colony ships?

Not anywhere close. NASA is still on K2 (Kepler 2) for identifying planets that pass in front of their stars and we're over 20 years before we expect to have the technology to even begin figuring out if these planets are habitable, their geography, or if there's even life there. As for sleeper ships, I don't know the status of cyrogenic technology though I wouldn't put much stock in anything we have now. As for travel, NASA is shooting for us to make it to Mars by the early 2040's or so while SpaceX has a much more optimistic and continually pushed back estimate. Basically, we don't know where to send the ships, don't have the technology to preserve the people, and are barely moving out of our own orbit for manned missions with estimates putting it at 20 years in the future.

On a serious and on topic note, my heart goes out to those in my grandmother's hometown.

Hopefully there isn't too much damage. Didn't Mexico have an 8.something earthquake just a few weeks ago.

The news looks very tragic, I’m afraid - there are been reports of dozens of fatalities: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-41327593

The earthquake according to USGS is a magnitude 7.1 located in the state of Puebla at a depth of 51 kilometres (31 miles). So it's about 10 times less powerful than the earthquake that struck near Chiapas earlier this month and also deeper as well. Building collapses could be either due to poor construction in lower income areas or unseen earthquake damage from the previous earthquake. So far about 60 people have been killed.

An earthquake in Chiapas is different from one hitting the sinking capital.

Sadly, it is past 100 now. Building collapses can also involve buildings built before regulations for greater resilience against seismic events.

Not to mention that all of modern day Mexico City is built on the soil of the mow dried up Lake Texcoco after the Spanish drained it to control flooding of the city and area.

There is a very popular Mexican on youtube ( he has 8.5million subsribers) who had a live connection via youtube today to show what had happened in Mexico city. His building had minor damage but in other neighborhoods some buildings collapsed.

For those that understand spanish this is the video which is only 6 hours old and already has 1.6 million views - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeLUQFGcamY

If Earth wanted to kill us, it would start with the US, China and maybe Russia as well. These are the biggest offenders by a long shot.

Since when is there only poor construction in low income areas? Also Mexico City isn't built on a very solid foundation.

There's poor construction everywhere. What with a corrupt government and the entire municipality being built on a (mostly) dried up lake bed where the Aztec city Tenochtitlan used to be. It also sinks into the ground a little bit each year and so it was a bad idea to begin with to build on it in the first place.

Because the people who can afford adequate building materials enough to meet government seismic standards don't want to live or work in buildings that could collapse. There's a reason not that many people died in Mexico City itself compared with neighbouring states.

And I am fully aware that Mexico City is built on an old lake, which amplifies the shockwaves. However, buildings which are built to standard can withstand these. Those that are not, don't. I also said that it was possible that there was earthquake damage to many buildings that could have compromised their structural integrity, but were not found due to the fact that it was basically a fortnight between this earthquake and the one that struck near Chiapas.

Were not talking about your personal opinion about which nations are the worst offenders okay there are other threads for that stick to actually talking about the earthquake in Mexico.

Nature and the universe doesn't care about your politics believe it or not.
Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is
the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried from time to time." -

Mexico is especially unlucky this year. Two major quakes, hurricanes and Trump.
