Most likely is no coalition at all, but a Tory Gov.
However, this is a *slight* chance of a Lib-Lab coalition

The Conservatives get the first crack if they win right? How close are the Lib-Dem and Labour parties on the issues?

Not really. Since Brown is the PM, he can try to form a majority first against Tory opposition. If that fails it goes to the Tories.

In rough order, the most likely outcomes are:

A Conservative minority government (as in Canada)

A Conservative majority government

A Labour / Liberal Democrat alliance of some unspecified sort.

It's worth noting that while Britain has had some considerable experience of hung parliaments (at least in the period before WWII), we do not typically have coalitions. Past precedent in the case of a hung parliament typically leans towards minority governments, like in 1923 and 1929.

Labour and Conservatives are closing in with just three seats apart, continuing to monitor the situation. No, make it two.

The conservatives get the first crack if they win outright. Otherwise it's a matter for whoever can arrange a sufficiently large group.

Cameron is claiming that Brown has lost his 'mandate to rule', sounding pretty smug and triumphant (Not sure which polls he's looking at).

Right, I'm going to have to give up and go to bed.

God only knows what I'm going to wake up to tomorrow, but so far it looks like a fairly disappointing night for the Lib Dems by the standards of where they hoped to be even 8 hours ago. As to whether it's a good night for Labour or the Conservatives, I'll have to wait and see tomorrow morning.

He does look a bit smug, even without speaking, don't the conservatives have others who could lead?
