The Christian Discussion thread IX: Pelagius Rising.

Postby Tarsonis Survivors » Sat Sep 09, 2017 12:42 am

This is the ninth version of the Christian discussion thread, where participants can discuss Christianity in general, the differences between the denominations, general comparative theology (both within and without Christianity), Church history, and many other topics.

While discussion naturally covers a broad range of themes, members of the moderation team (including those participating in the thread), may occasionally gently suggest that some topics might be best taken to a separate thread; this will usually only occur when a subject is itself the subject of discussion in recurring separate NSG threads and would risk dominating this thread if discussed here (examples include, but are not limited to, abortion, homosexuality, the existence of the historical Jesus and/or the existence of God.)

Any idea where I can get readings on the aspect of dualism? As a roman catholic it intrigues me a lot.

If seems to me that Jefferson was trying to change Jesus into someone he liked, instead of following him wholeheartedly.

Oh and also it speaks in Revelation about how changing the words of God is a sin, so the Jefferson bible is a sin-filled document.

To continue a discussion from the previous thread, it is true that the United States (and any other nation) has to serve the interests of the state before God (thus is the nature of secularism). It doesn't explain, however, why so many Christians aren't themselves going out of their way to attempt to change policy in such a way as to make sure that refugees and immigrants are freely welcomed into their nation, and to make sure that Christians who hold differing views on immigration are smacked in the head with Matthew 25.

There are tons of differences. Where should I start? Well, in Catholicism, we believe that the Eucharist, that is the bread and wine, transubstantiate into the actual Body and Blood of Christ, while the Protestants believe that it's nothing more than a symbol. The Catholic bible has 73 books in it, while the Protestant bible has 66. Why is this? Well, when Martin Luther started up Lutheranism, he took out 7 books that he deemed were unnecessary. Those books were: Tobit, Judith, Additions to Esther (Vulgate Esther 10:4–16:24), Wisdom (also called the Wisdom of Solomon), Sirach (also called Ecclesiasticus), Baruch, including the Letter of Jeremiah (Additions to Jeremiah in the Septuagint), Additions to Daniel: Prayer of Azariah and Song of the Three Holy Children (Vulgate Daniel 3:24–90), Susanna (Vulgate Daniel 13, Septuagint prologue), Bel and the Dragon (Vulgate Daniel 14, Septuagint epilogue), 1 Maccabees, and 2 Maccabees.

Also, I love this new thread smell...smells like...baby powder almost...

From a Protestant perspective, at least, Martin Luthernproginally moved the apocryphal texts to the back of the Bible in its own section. They weren't removed until later because translators considered them less important than the other books of the Bible, I think after his death, and the Protestant Bible was based on a different canon.

Thoughts on the Westboro Baptist church?

I think they are radicals. They make modern pop songs into their propaganda songs preaching their values, and more things.

Also, how do you think of Gilead from The Handmaid's Tale (I know this isn't a Handmaid's Tale discussion thread but Gilead is christian)

I don't know if I'm the best to fill you in, I'm pretty biased on the subject.

"Officially" the seven apocryphal texts were removed from Protestant canon because they don't appear in the Hebrew canon. However the truth is much more sinister, in that the Protestant reformers, Luther in particular, tried to remove books from the canon that contradicted their theology. Luther, for instance, tried to get James removed, going so far as calling it the "epistlenof straw" primarily for its emphasis on works as necessary for salvation. But fortunately other reformers rejected this effort.

I'm not entirely sure, but it wouldn't surprise me. Revelation is an.... odd... book to say the least.
