Seems like piss poor planning on the nursing home's part. What sort of medical care facility dosnt have a generator?

The south is hot. A/C was one of the big reasons for people wanting to move south, since it definitely made it easier to live here. Even I can't take the heat most times -.-

Fortunately, I only lost power for around three hours. I only have air conditioning in my bedroom though, and box fans everywhere else, but the last few days it's been cool due to winds from the storm.

I'm glad that it was coldish when I lost power for over 24 hours

Why would you assume it's a shady organization? This article in the NY Times has more detail than the CNN one above. They were doing the best the could, they called Florida Power and were told help was on the way. It's a tragedy but I did not get the impression the people running the place were indifferent to the suffering of their patients.

I live in Land O Lakes. No loss of power, minimal flooding in the surrounding area (was pumped out today), not even damage to our trees.

And, we did the responsible thing and prepared ourselves for the Hurricane way in advance. We have an emergency pantry full of non-perishables, an emergency radio I bought, and flashlights.

Slowly becoming dehydrating as the heat makes you uncomfortably sweaty to the point that even your own clothes feel like they're strangling you, nobody capable of doing anything about it.

Even worse for the ones that can't move about without help. Add all of that, plus they can't do ANYTHING to make themselves more comfortable, whether it's going outside or fanning themselves or getting water for themselves.

Or, you know, they could have just let them outside, or helped them outside to at least get some goddamn fresh air.
