And a sheriff had to lose some of his precious time during a hurricane to explain that shooting at a storm isn't a great idea.

A Florida sheriff is warning citizens not to shoot guns at Hurricane Irma as the monster storm approaches Florida.

“To clarify, DO NOT shoot weapons @ #Irma,” the Pasco County, Fla. sheriff tweeted. “You won't make it turn around & it will have very dangerous side effects.”

The sheriff was responding to a viral Facebook event that jokingly encouraged people to shoot guns at the hurricane. More than 26,000 people have marked themselves as “attending” the event.

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence also issued a warning to followers to not shoot guns at the storm.

One of the creators of the event, Ryon Edwards, told Yahoo News that he created the event out of “stress and boredom.”

"I never envisioned this event becoming some kind of crazy idea larger than myself. It has become something a little out of my control,” Edwards said.

Other joke Irma events have been created in the days leading up to the storm, including “Push Hurricane Irma Somewhere Else” and “Peacefully Protesting Hurricane Irma.”

“Let's show Hurricane Irma that her ideology of violence and destruction are not welcome in Gainesville,” the latter event’s description reads.

Nearly 7 million people were asked to evacuate ahead of Irma’s landfall, which is expected to occur Sunday. The Category 4 storm has reached the Florida Keys and is battering the islands with strong winds and storm surge as it makes its way towards mainland Florida.

I thought this was a joke.

Born in Florida and lived in it most of my life, a shame I'm not currently home to enjoy this Hurricane. Admittedly, I'd likely do some stupid shit. I have a habit of enjoying the outdoors in up to Cat 3 hurricanes. I remember my escapades with friends in swimming in flooded waterways during Wilma and Charley.

It's called land.

No seriously land slows down hurricanes, when they are out in open ocean they tend to move at 15 mph

Until about a generation ago, all hurricanes had female names. Many women protested that this practice was sexist, so the policy changed to alternate between female and male names.

Actually, some of the very earliest hurricane names were male: they were named after politicians that the author didn't like, so he could accuse them of "wandering aimlessly" and such (he also did some after his girlfriends).

Clement Wragge, yeah. It should be pointed out that they were Australian politicians he didn't like, as he was working in Queensland. He originally wanted to just use the letters of the Greek alphabet. It was US Army Air Forces meteorologists on Saipan in 1944 who started naming storms after wives and girlfriends, some 20+ years after Wragge died.

TV news said the Keys were underwater. Seems the ocean surge has them underwater.

A newsman on Marcos island Florida, which is South of Naples on the Gulf coast, said that Dolphins and Manatees were being caught in low water. Seems the wind was blowing all the water in the bay out to sea lowering the water level in the bay. Marco island is suppose to be in the eye of the hurricane (where the winds are calm) about now. Around half an hour, the hurricane force winds will change direction and an ocean surge of up to 12 feet could enter the bay and hit them. They say the Southern part of the hurricane hasthe same wind intensity but less rain then the Northern part.

The storms forward movement is currently 12 MPH after being at 9 MPH. Its almost traveling due North. And its now a category 3. Cuba they said since the hurricane got close to Cuba that the mountains there took some of the power out of the category 5 hurricane which is why it hit the Keys has a category 4 and now its down to a category 3. It also steer it away from Floridas east coast to Floridas West coast.

Yeah, but it might not happen to you but to someone else. Shooting up in the air is dangerous at all times, firing bullets into 125 MPH winds is even more so.
