Seattle Mayor Calls for Removal of Lenin Statue

Postby Republic Of Varra » Thu Aug 17, 2017 9:18 pm

By this point since the Charlottesville incident, people across the US have called for the removal of Confederate statues, and Seattle is no different. However, a new development in the saga has arisen:

http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/seattle-mayor-murray-calls-for-removal-of-confederate-monument-lenin-statue/

With the removal of the Confederate statues, come the removal of communist statues as well in this wild ride.

Personally, I have mixed feelings as opposed to my staunch stance of anti removal for the Confederate statues. On one hand, it is indeed a piece of history. On the other, it is a statue that has nothing to do with American history and was brought over in the late 20th century from Czechoslovakia. Perhaps a museum piece would fit.

That's just my silly opinion. What are your thoughts NSG? Do you agree with the Seattle mayor? Or do you believe otherwise?

Both statues are on private property, so all the Mayor can do is express his personal opinion.

That Seattle Times article heading is kind of whack it is almost like they have never used the word "and" before in a heading.

Tbh I think he's just a fun city meme but if a bunch of ppl are unironically salty for non-partisan reasons over it then sure

Murray is honestly making a mistake tho- this is probs gonna lead to alt-right ppl doing some awesome whataboutism regarding Lenin and other statues of leftists or smthn

But then again, Murray seems incapable of doing anything but making mistakes at this point so who tf cares

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has called for both the monument to Confederate soldiers at Capitol Hill’s Lake View Cemetery and a statue of Vladimir Lenin in Fremont to be taken down, saying they represent “historic injustices” and are symbols of hate, racism and violence.

Vladimir Lenin, noted white supremacist.

Not if it makes it out to the point a reader could mistake them for equating both the confederacy, and Lenin. Which lets be honest the Combined Syndicates of America are a bunch of traitors who deserved to be forgotten.

No, the replacement should be a statue honoring the casualties of the Pig War.

Seattleite here. I've seen the Lenin Statue in person, but I'm like "who cares?" We aren't celebrating Lenin or the Confederacy since neither have much relevance to Seattle or Washington (Washington wasn't in the Civil War and Seattle isn't a "socialist hellhole" as FOX News likes to say).

Statues and landmarks are supposed to symbolize what we value. Sure, there's white nationalists and hardcore communists in Seattle, but the majority of us do not value Lenin or the Confederacy. That's important. Seattle is all about the diversity of cultures and I think these symbols are a testament to that.

Either that or we remove the hurtful symbols. But that's boring. :p

Eminent Domain. :^)

I'm fine with taking this piece of private property for public use and in the process demolishing the statue.

Bit ironic that it's private property. I mean - I'm down with removing confederate statues on public/government property, and if this statue was the same way, I'd definitely be okay with it.

Lenin was obviously a bastard - but the mayor isn't being smart politically. People are riled up over the confederate shit right now given the alt right tide in our country. Frankly, this is probably just not an issue to most people.
