Forced sterlization is so wildly unethical it's not even funny. The government has no right to force a medical procedure on someone, regardless of their part in a crime. These people are criminals, but denying them their fundamental right to bodily autonomy is a gross overreach of power and cruel and unusual punishment.

If they are convicted, then they are well within their fundamental human rights to have children after their prison sentences, and if they continue to abuse those children, then the state will have to intervene on behalf of the abused once again.

It's not like they're going to have anymore children at this point, first of all, so there's no point. Second, forced sterilization of anyone is inhumane, and while these are some awful, disgusting people, nobody should be forced through such a procedure. Finally, in prison a person has a lifetime to mull over what they did wrong. They're stuck with their offenses each and every moment of the day. That's the only good punishment for a child abuser. To make them live with their mistakes every day.

Yeah, and prison is unequal by being harder on some people than others. Does that make prison an inherently unequal punishment?

There's a reason I mentioned keeping them away from kids; it's not like I was saying "vasectomy, then off you go." Obviously the legal system needs to watch 'em like a hawk. And yeah, if it gets to the point where they defy court orders they would need to be locked up to keep the threat they pose to society at bay.

But until then, let's save incarceration for cases where we need it.

I know you have plenty of reason to think this way, but the problem is this: if you get life for child abuse, and you get 25 to life for murder, then what prevents an abuser from killing their kid to get rid of the evidence of abuse? We've seen people try that before too -- calling in a missing person report to throw off suspicion, and they've killed and stowed the body somewhere.

It's the same reason rape's not a capital crime -- to prevent rapists from murdering their victims in addition to violating them in an attempt to avoid the death penalty.
