I wonder if this is significant enough to affect the coming gubernatorial election. If so, who benefits?

I don't know. It may make a difference since Northam is the Lieutenant Governor and McAuliffe has had a proactive response to this.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

Yes I fear it's going to get worse, the sad thing was that a lot of people on both sides created this situation, people have been driven into a siege mentality and it's not going to get any better.

Luziyca wrote:Honestly, I feel that this is the opening shot. I feel there will be revenge, and then they will take revenge, and oh look, civil war.

I think that's the real reason behind the state of Emergency, preventing any reprisal attacks and shutting it down before it gets further out of control.

It might not work but at least if there is a revenge attack it won't be going down in Charlottesville.

Pepe the Frog was created as a cartoon with no political meaning. The alt-right began to use him as a symbol for some strange reason.

That's arguably the point.
It's the means by which toxic politics can be advanced through absurdity.

If you just straightforwardly argue for the extermination of the jews, it won't get as much traction as doing so in a ridiculous manner. It's a method of overriding the emotional response people have to the message.

If your mascot is a ridiculous screaming frog that makes people laugh or roll their eyes, you can slap a caption about gassing gays under it.

There was a good article on the method and how it's basically one of the main tactics of the alt-right.

Since it's cloaked in insincerity and a lot of their politics is humorous or dressed up in humor, you also get non-believers spreading their arguments/ideas just for lulz. It's a bit of a coup for racist politics.

Some frogs can kill you if you touch them, although most cases of frog imagery just use the standard not-dangerous-to-touch frog.

Not funny, simply less threatening, less historically powerful and significant.

It's absurd. It's a frog. And apparently that's the whole point.

He has said something, at least. 'Best regards' to wounded protesters and calling the attack 'sad', as if caused by something outside human control. It's a disgrace.

It serves as both racism and a parody of racism.
It's also a makeover for the far-right, since now instead of stern and serious people talking about how miserable everything is, they're seen engaging in humor and having a good time.
That has effects on recruitment and appealing to people.

Look no further than reddits The_Donald for an example on how insincere, ridiculous, over the top kind of behavior can go viral but nonetheless actually sink in and make people start believing it.

Okay, so, I can explain.

Two big 4Chan memes: Pepe and Gets

Pepe = the green frog
Gets = repeating end numbers on the end of the sequential post numbers

Then you have "kek" which is a Korean term indicating laughter, and "cuck", a shortening of "cuckhold".

And then, about two years ago, some anon taking a uni class on Ancient Egypt was reading about Ancient Egyptian gods, and learned about one named "Kek" (also pronounced "Kuk"). This god supposedly was represented as a man with a frog head, and created things out of primordial chaos using repeating arithmetic.
