In Uzbekistan 15% of the prison population died every month during the famine. Hmm, interesting. I never knew that, to be quite honest, and that does put the brutality of the Gulags into a greater perspective. I'd still argue that it wasn't necessarily genocide (at least not post-Stalin), particularly when compared to the practices of the Nazis.
