The Knockout Gun Gals wrote:Invasion is not part of those option. You cannot really expect the European armies to survive without US. Sure, Russia's military is outdated and not whole modernized, but they are Russians. They have huge military.

Except Russia (As well as China, for that matter) aren't really that outdated, and are rapidly closing the gap.

New haven america wrote:Actually they only have about 200,000 more fighters than the US' total armed forces. (2.5 mil vs 2.3 mil respectively)

However, when you take NATO into account, we're more than 2x the size of them (Let's change that number to 2.5 mil vs 7.4 mil (With 3.5 mil ready for deployment)).

Vast oversimplification here. First and foremost, the US Army currently rates a third of its combat brigades as effective as the most clear cut example. What does this mean in real terms? Back in 2003 we went into Iraq with 22 Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs have about 4,500 men); today we only have 20 that the Army rates as ready for combat duty. I don't think I should have to explain how bad of an idea it is to assume you can take on a peer power like Russia with less troops then it took to bungle the Iraqi War. As for our European leeches partners, the state of the Dutch Army having no ammo to even train says it all.

The East Marches II wrote:Oh no, old T-72s, whatever will we do?

To be blunt, we die.

Back during the Cold War we knew for a fact it was almost impossible to punch through the forward armor of even the T-62s, while we had a documented instance during the First Gulf War of a T-64 knocking out two of our Abrams before it was destroyed. That feat is made all the more startlingly when you realize that this Iraqi tank crew was less well trained than a Russian crew would be and was using export models of Russian tanks (Thus lacking the modern ammo and armor systems of the Russian Army's own tanks). If you've got the time, I'd also highly recommend you give a read to this Russian ERA testing back from the 1990s, then reflect upon the fact that they've had a new system of it since the mid-2000s while the US just started producing the ammo to counter it in 2013.

Neo Balka wrote:Oh no, the SOviet army of the 1970s is coming!

You'd be wise to remember that core elements of U.S. equipment, such as the F-15, are likewise from the 1970s.

I know that they did harken back to it. There are still significant differences.
The country is not an empire run by a glorified city council and fifty warrior-princes but a federal republic of fifty states and I forgot how many territories. Its' constitution isn't a bunch of politically manipulated traditions based on smoke, dust and habit and nothing else. There's a paper behind them. And our institutions are not endemically ridden with bribe-happy nutbags no better than anthropomorphic squirrels.
And the political violence hasn't reached the levels of the first century BC. There aren't mobs going on killing sprees in Washington, or conspiracies with elements of the military to overthrow the government and a civil war every two decades. And though our populists are as craven and corrupt as the Roman ones, they aren't bribing the military into supporting them, are they?

Trump threatens North Korea after US assesses they have miniaturized a nuclear warhead
http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/08/politics/ ... index.html

Washington (CNN) - President Donald Trump issued an extraordinary ultimatum to North Korea on Tuesday warning Pyongyang not to make any more threats against the United States or they will "face fire and fury like the world has never seen," during a photo op at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

I am familiar with the war is boring thing and A-10s. As well with the other points, I agree on crew training and vehicles. What I disagree on is the that we lose. Stratfor has an excellent series of articles on the matter explaining why the Russians have to engage in their current form of undeclared war because toe to toe, they can't compete. I constantly go on about NATO spending and our allies uselessness because of this threat. They will not reach the channel, they may reach Berlin and we will have to feed troops in from an ocean away onto a crumbling battlefield when with a bit more spending, the threat could be stopped and the situation vastly improved. This is a country with the GDP of Spain and their financial decisions regarding military kit are constrained accordingly.

Edit: Regarding stratfor links, please open one in normal browser, one in inprivate this way you can get around paywall. If you can't, I would be very happy to post them here if need be.

DPRK has been threatening to nuke the whole wide world for the last 20 years. Have they done it yet? The point is, a conscript army that is fed on <500 kcals a day is less of a deterrent than the 6th Army in Stalingrad during the final days before the surrender, a few missile operators that can be fed using the food that the army isn't needing anymore has a better chance at deterring a Western invasion than the current KPA.

No, but they haven't actually had the capability to do so. Now they have actually developed an ICBM capable of reaching the United States and they are conducting more frequent missile tests.

Oh please. If Trump gets shot the nation will forget his incompetence and pettiness in mourning, plus he becomes a martyr and saint figure to his cultists. If he's alive and ejected from office it's pure schadenfreude with crowds chanting "YOU'RE FIRED!" at him repeatedly.
