John Mccain has saved Obamacare...

Postby Bijan » Thu Jul 27, 2017 11:51 pm

The irony in this cannot be understated. One of the fiercest opponents to Obamacare has just saved the bill by preventing a "skiny repeal". As a conservative (well, maybe more of social moderate GOP supporter), I tip my hat to someone who did what was best for the American people. Obamacare should be improved, but not the way the GOP proposed for it to be accomplished. Thank you for doing whats best for Americans, and hopefully we can see Obamacare improved for all people, with both sides now working together.

I would have expected someone else to be a no vote. There were some names being floated as possible defectors during this process, but it didn't seem like McCain was one of them... so it's kind of surprising to see it be him. I would suggest trying to work something out with Democrats, but that may not happen, either.

When will single-payer receive at least some consideration among our representatives?

European here, what's wrong with the ACA? Why are republicans so determined to "repeal and replace" it?

There's a lot wrong with the ACA, mostly on account of it being an extremely neutered version of public healthcare that is inefficient and fails to adequately provide for people.

Republicans hate it because it falls short of their utopian vision of corporations unaccountably raping the poor and middle-class forever. And because Democrats came up with it, and Republicans hate everything Democrats love. Even the environment it seems.

It forces people to pay for other people to have unaffordable insurance all around. I loathe socialism and even I would prefer single-payer.

I also hate that it confuses health insurance with health care.

Fucking be honest asshole (politicians, not you Ocelot), ACA is just a mandated individual subsidy for the insurance industry and really has little to do with health care.

(BigJim, Neanderthaland) That sounds like public healthcare aka what the rest of the world has in one form or another. Why repeal it if it's just a "lite" version of public healthcare? If the UK can afford the famous NHS, shouldn't you be able to have something similar?

Another European here, but I`ve studied the topic.

Basically, Obamacare is this:

Private ensurers are obligated to accept ANYONE who applies, and can only charge them more based on their age.
It boosts medicare and medicaid a little bit and taxes the rich to pay for it.
Everyone has to buy ensurance, or pay a fine.

The idea was to get SOME healthcare to the very sickest and poorest out there, who nobody would have ensured otherwise.

And this sort of did happen.
Except ensurance costs have risen for everyone, and ensurance companies have started sneakily reducing the number of things they cover, to offset the loss of having to ensure those aforementioned unfortunates.

In the end, everyone who was not completely destitute got screwed hard to make the completely destitute a little less destitute, and make the super rich even richer.

Look at my factbook if you want to know anything else about me for RP purposes

Healthcare is not a right, it is a service, and forcing someone to provide a service is slavery. As is forced subsidy towards an industry.

My point is: If rich nations like the UK can afford public healthcare, why can't the US have public healthcare as well? Even we Greeks have a functioning public healthcare system. I don't understand why a nation is rich as the US is still struggling to find a working solution.

If we're thinking of the same case here, no. To me it sounds more more like UK healthcare prevented two misguided parents from intensifying their son's suffering, and opened the way for him to die with what little peace and dignity he still has left. That's not condemnation, it's protection.

Nope, a judge ruled being used as lab experiment with almost certainly zero benefit to the child wasn't in child's best interest.

Well, more like not extending/multiplying the suffering needlessly.

And besides, the main person who stopped it was actually a judge.

Conserative Morality wrote:"It's not time yet" is a tactic used by reactionaries in every era. "It's not time for democracy, it's not time for capitalism, it's not time for emancipation." Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.
