I heard 38 threatened. I have no doubt this will go to the Supreme court.

Threatening isn't necessarily the same thing as going through with it, though. It all depends on how the public reacts to the passage.

IIRC, there is an exception for the poorest (Up to 133% of federal poverty line IIRC) and subsidies to provide help.

The reason for it, as it was explained, is that since insurance companies will no longer be able to drop or deny coverage, they didn't want people waiting until they actually got sick to buy insurance. That would drive costs up instead of down. So in making everyone buy it, costs drop.

There's a sliding scale of subsidies for people making less that 400% of the poverty level.

It means fine you if you don't have health care.

Right, I understand that. What I'm saying is, if you're too poor -to afford- healthcare, they fine you? How does that work?

No. If you fall below a certin minimum income, you aren't fined, and you may be covered by medicare.

Actually medicaid.

Right, same idea. Government insurance.

Uh... No. Given that federal law overrides state and local.

The chances of said 38 actually managing to call a convention and pass an amendment is slim to none.

The vote for the motion to recommit failed, with at the moment 10 Dems voting yea.

EDIT: According to CNN (and close listeners), someone yelled out "Baby killer" while Rep. Stupak gave his speech.

Right, I understand that. What I'm saying is, if you're too poor -to afford- healthcare, they fine you? How does that work?

No. There are many very healthy young people, like myself, who don't want to buy health insurance because of the very low odds that I will ever need it.

It has made sense so far because I can put half of what I would spend on insurance in a rainy day fund and I have more than I will ever need unless some crazy unlikely health event were to occur (and I've never been a fan of the lottery  ). Now, after this bill, I might as well buy insurance so that I don't have to pay the fine.

It makes more of a profit for insurance companies, because I will pay much more into them than I will ask out, so they can use the large profit of me they make to pay for losses on some of the older customers.

It's the only major annoyance I've had with the bill, I call it the screw the young, save the old plan.

What? That doesn't work. I mean, that's the same kind of logic that says health insurance companies will pay out if you get sick, instead of trying to weasel out of their obligations. Just because they can't do anymore apparently that is irrelevant. The government isn't making them lower prices, I guess, so they won't. In fact, now that people -can't opt out- without fines, what's stopping them putting it up? That would maximise profits, in a captive market.
