So we finally have it one of the most anticipated casting reveals of all time.

http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-40624288

For the first time in the history of the the long running science fiction series Doctor Who has its first female lead. Jodie Whittaker. It has upset some people calling it a gimmick or appeal to Political Correctness because the doctor has always been a man. Its been established in the lore of the show that Time Lords can change race and gender.

I have no problem with the casting and think its a bold move and huge moment for television. To call it a gimmick or appeal to PC is sexist. I think people are afraid of change.

What's your take NSG on this history making moment?

Ill reserve judgement till i see her on screen, her gender to me is irrelevant and does not bother me though i do think that they had the balls to do it was kind of cool.

I really don;t give a crap about an actors gender or race or such (unless they're playing a historical character), so if shes the best for the job, good on them.

Clearly this is just the Tory government pushing their extreme liberal agenda through their mouthpiece, the BBC.

Female Doctor?

I’m fine with this, During regeneration, a Time Lord can change sex, we have seen that already, so I’m fine with this.

Don’t see what the big deal is about.

Never liked that show so it's not like I give the slightest shit about it personally. But well, as long as it's not fucking with the canon and it's exploited intelligently in the scenario, I don't really see what we're supposed to be particularly upset or happy about.

Not really, plenty of the Doctor's companions have been female, so nothing really historic about it.

Women have been on television before. In leading roles, even.

How so, tho? The main character of a B series is going to be female rather than male. What's the big deal? It's not like it's the first time it has happened and it apparently make sense canon-wise. So what is there to be so excited about?

I was hoping not to find out who the new Doctor was until the Christmas episode, but even as I was hoping that I knew it was a bit of a vain hope, what with the internet being what it is :)

The Doctor is The Doctor. We've had a female Master (after Roger Delgardo, Anthony Ainley, Eric Roberts and John Sims) and we've seen plenty of Time Ladies before now - even seen Time Lords regerate into Time Ladies (and the other way round I think?)

The fact people are already losing their shit over this doesn't surprise me. The entire right-wing press was up in arms over a gay-black-female companion in the last series, they must be doing their nut over a female Doctor now.

(By far and away the best comment on the Bill Potts saga, by the way, was "THE DOCTOR HAVING A BLACK LESBIAN AS A COMPANION DOES NOT REPRESENT TRUE BRITISH VALUES". Which is hilarious because The Doctor is not actually British. Or, come to that, human. But anyway).

As for whether she will make a good Doctor - that is not a matter of being male or female, that is more a matter of whether she, herself, will make a good Doctor. Sylvester McCoy was clearly male, but not so much a good Doctor. Tom Baker, Peter Davison, David Tennant, Matt Smith - good Doctors all. But not because they were male, because they were good. I think Michelle Gomez was one of the two best Masters we have had (Anthony Ainley being the other) so, you know.

Plus lets not forget we have a whole new show runner as well. The Moffat is going to be done, and Mr Chibnall is taking over, so the entire show is changing. The phrase "start of a new era" is really not going to do it justice :)

Meh, show went down the pan a while ago. Capaldi is a great actor but viewing figures were pretty low because the writing has gone downhill.

If I remember correctly, she was in attack the block, where I thought she did very well, so I think it's a good casting choice, but I still think it's doomed to failure because of the poor writing.

Edit: did not know about the new writers Calladan mentioned. Maybe it will get better - could not get much worse!

Some people on the internet (shocker i know) are particularly upset because this Ruins™ everything apparently.

Saw a screen capture of one fuckwit on a Daily Mail article saying Time Travel was "Men's Business" or something like that.

edit: Saw another there now on another article from Radio Times where someone called her a "Stupid Dyke Bitch who ruined the series" So some people are pretty salty and easily offended.
