Now, if the BBC wanted to be REALLY progressive - they would make the doctor Scottish! Now, I don't mean give him a Scottish accent, or let a scot play him ( while still covering his accent ), I mean make him unapologetically Scottish. Plaid kilt, full Red beard, drinks scotch like a fish drinks water, unintelligible 70% of the time, make em' weight 16/17 stones, and replace his sonic screwdriver with fists! Oh, and make his companion William Wallace, or something equally stereotypical.

That would be a BOLD move!

Capaldi is Scottish. I think this will bring it lots of new fans.

He's no true scot! I want the next doctor - ANNOYINGLY Scottish.

Edit: also, just looked up his wiki, did you know he was in World War Z. He was, I am completely serious, a W.H.O doctor.

To be honest, I was unlikely to watch the next season anyway - the last season was almost unwatchable due to the show's decline in quality, and it's clear that it's only going to get worse. She might be brilliant in the role - Peter Capaldi certainly was - but it's the writing, not the acting that makes the show and I don't see any signs that the writing is about to improve.

What would be a sign that the writing's about to improve? Other than, y'know, the current head writer quitting and being replaced?

I think that would probably be the sign I'd be looking for.

I really liked Steven Moffat at first, but his plots have become convoluted and nonsensical - where Russell T. Davies clearly planned ahead and knew what he wanted to achieve, I feel like Moffat just makes it up as he goes along and is quite careless in doing so.

I think it could go either really well or really poorly.

If they just focus on the plot and the gender of the Doctor is not made a huge deal it could probably go well, but if the fact she's a woman is made into a huge deal it'll put a lot of people off - virtue signalling and feminism doesn't sell.

Torchwood was good until it wasn't.

Another show of his, Broadchurch, was good and then just okay and then good again but a bit preachy.

Eh, there'll be good episodes, if only because of the guest writers. Every series so far has had its ups and downs.

I personally love the choice: Jodie Whittaker is an amazing actress, and at this point in the show's run, they needed a Creative jolt to really shake things up. All you kept hearing in the build-up were the two extreme wings bickering back and forth: one side saying they would never support a non-male Doctor, the other saying they would only except a non-white/male Doctor. As far as I'm concerned, they could cast a sentient tea pot in the role if that was the best choice available. Jodie Whittaker is a known quantity: she's extremely talented and could really do well in this role. That's more than enough for me to get me on board.

If anything, I think people should be a lot more concerned about the new show-runner Chris Chibnall than the gender of the Thirteenth Doctor. Unlike Moffat, who came into the leadership role with a slew of highly-received episodes to his credit, Chibnall's past work in Doctor Who has been less successful. I haven't seen much of Torchwood, so maybe he did better handling that canon, but I'm cautiously optimistic about the overall direction Chibnall will take in his first full series. On the plus side though, Chibnall and Whittaker undoubtedly have a strong bond through their work on Broadchurch, so maybe there won't be a huge feeling-out process to start out with like there was when Capaldi took over the role.

Whatever as long as the script is good. Moffat's scripts for series 8 and 9 sucked so much that I haven't watched series 10 so far. Moffat totally killed Capaldi's Doctor, I hope Chibnall will perform better.

Look at the comment sections of the YouTube trailers, it's David Tennant leaving all over again. :P
"Imperial Socialist Republic of", "Socialist Empire of", "Socialist Imperium of", "Socialist Kingdom of", "Imperial Socialist State of", and etcetera just make absolutely no sense. Socialism's goal is Communism and Communism can't properly exist if an Imperialist power exists, especially if said nation is the Imperialist power.

Okay - I have to ask, because I have done this about 9 times out of ten so far.

Has anyone else misread his name as Chinball?

Or is it just me?

On a related note (sort of) I am far more concerned about the new head writer (Show Runner) coming in than a new Doctor. Since the show started anew (back in 2005) we have had two head writers (RTD and The Moff) spanning twelve years, but four Doctors (five if you include John Hurt, and - by the way - the new Doctor should really be Doctor14, not Doctor13, but that is a whole other issue) and for me a new Head Writer and a new direction for the show is a far more serious thing than a new Doctor.

Anyway.
