Honestly, I don't either like it or hate it. If anything, it confuses me even more about Gallifreyans and how their regeneration works.

I would be 100% supportive of a spin-off with a female Gallifreyan main character. But a female Doctor when 13 previous regenerations have all been male makes me ask questions - not necessarily negative questions, just questions.

Well, the show has shown that regeneration can change sex of a Time Lord or Lady. I don't think it should raise questions that weren't asked when Missy showed up, or when 11 mentioned the Corsair.

That's the first time I started questioning how Gallifreyans even worked. Do they choose their new form or is it random? Does it even have to be human in appearance? Can the Doctor take the form of a Dalek or a Cyberman if he wanted?

I admit I assumed a few things due to the Doctor's relative consistency up until that point.

They always have a Time Lord appereance, two hearts, mind powers and the ability to regenerate. However, the outcome of regeneration within those parameters is mostly randomised. I say mostly, because there is proof that the subcontious is able to affect regeneration outcome, like with Capali and Tennant2. So, he has to be human in appereance, but the rest is random.

Unless a Time Lord runs out of regenerations. Then weird shit happens.

Someone here did a little bit of data analysis and came up with the figure 80% of comments about the new Doctor on social media are positive

Also, it totally matches the ghostbusters thing, and, given I'm on the net a lot in places where people talk about gendered issues (on both sides of the aisle), and I heard *about* the outrage before ever hearing the outrage, the timing seems to fit.

Incidentally, I observed the same timing on the ghostbusters thing.

Just adding to this, I've noticed the same pattern - you hear about the outrage before hearing any actual outrage - over and over again. Some of this is because feminists have really good media platforms, whereas other people talking about gendered issues don't, but original "source" outrage is pretty thin on the ground in most of the cases I've seen.

A partial list of times I've heard feminists complain about outrage before hearing the primary outrage:

That's not to say that there hasn't been actual outrage. For example, once feminists brought the new Ghostbusters movie to public attention, the reaction to the movie was generally not positive. Similarly, Feminist Frequency has attracted a lot of criticism - but was virtually unknown until feminists publicized their outrage about what was, at that point, no more than a very small number of critics. In the case of Mad Max, there was an actual article (though not from a men's rights advocate, as widely claimed) used as a basic source for the feminist reaction. That said, it's a viral technique with a track record of success in drawing publicity, which is exactly what clever marketers want to use. Viral techniques have a small initial outlay, and if they "catch," they're incredibly effective marketing in terms of dollars spent to publicity gained.

1. This one backfired in some ways, "whitewashing" beat "comic bros hate women" in the conflict of narratives - but even being on the "losing" side of the controversy meant the movie's profile was raised a lot.
2. Islam being the purported point of outrage, but the circulation pattern was the same.
3. This was purportedly about race. Again, circulated very widely among feminists pushing the "comic bros" narrative.
