The truth is, pretty much until the beginning of the 20th Century, Europeans and Americans were making out like gangbusters by ripping off the rest of the world as quickly and as efficiently as possible. We WERE the Mongol Horde.
But we also brought modern ways of thinking, governmental systems, legal conceptualities - in short, everything to make the places we ripped up viable states once they kicked us out.
To blame our ancestors for thinking that way is stupid - it was the way their culture worked. If you had the power to resist, like Japan, you were worth trading with - if not, some Euro power would colonize you. Too bad, so sad, should have developed the Maxim Gun first.
