If only our diplomacy had a wider option range than "say/do nothing" or "send nukes". Why didn't we pay more attention to the civics tree? I blame Brexit.

You could always have Boris step in.

Labour have no sense of memes.

This Henry the VIII clause shit should have seen them continually ripping the piss by beginning every statement in the commons with "Ave, true to caesar." in perpetuity.

If our officials are sure its Russia then the appropriate response is SIS using its assets in Russia to retaliate in a similar fashion.

If we allow foreign intelligence agencies to wantonly attempt murder on individuals who cooperate with us why do you think anyone will attempt to cooperate with us?

SVR attempted to murder someone under our protection in our country. Why do you think this isn’t serious?

The response should be diplomatic protest, and using the attack to smear Russia. Not getting into tit-for-tat revenge.

EDIT: Obviously this suggests a failure on MI5's part, and counter-espionage efforts should be redoubled.

When did you become so militant?

Probably when a foreign power smuggled a chemical WMD into his country and gassed someone with it, harming both a police officer and the man's daughter who weren't even involved. Thats a perfectly sensible reason to be mad.

Yeah it's a nice summary, but it'd be even nicer to see some estimate effects, possibly including both a lowball and a highball.

I know it's not really what you're looking for, but anyway: the House of Commons at long last released the analysis they received from a cross-Whitehall team of analysts (i.e. including HM Treasury, the foreign office and so on). You can have a look here: http://www.parliament.uk/documents/comm ... iefing.pdf

I'm reading it. It's pretty cool.

This in particular is a nice takeaway:

incidentally after seeing several cases of both the accused and victims having to spend literal years waiting for trials and trials being dragged out for over a period of years i've come to understand why the americans got mad over speedy trials.

i am constantly marveled by how directly the bill of rights translates to a "sick of britain's bullshit" list and how often said bullshit turns out to have continued to this very day.

e: unfortunately as a country that was also populated by people that left england because it was too liberal for them it also couldn't help but inherit many of our worst traits as well

He's not having a hard time, his response was very clear. He gave an example of Australia, whose trade with the US has increased far more than forecasted.

Even that is uncertain though.

Here's someone who thinks that it diverted trade that would have happened with third countries, rather than producing any extra trade, as it were: http://www.internationalaffairs.org.au/ ... h-america/

And what increase there was looks like it was very much focused on US imports to Australia, and much less the other way around. The direction of this was in line with forecasts at the time: http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/wp/2003/wp03206.pdf

Now, I don't personally have a problem with increasing one's bilateral trade deficit with someone, but it's clearly not what the Brexiteers are selling.

Going beyond that, obviously the problem with FTAs, particularly with the US, is also that it can be hard to stop them from creeping into national policy issues - healthcare in particular, since the US tends to push for provisions on pharma, etc, that don't work so well for socialised healthcare systems: https://theconversation.com/a-decade-on ... tury-33016

So Corbyn has been going hard against immigration recently - and it's curiously not got the same reaction among the left that a single phrase on a mug managed to achieve a few years ago.
