I've no idea, but Crown Estate money that's spent on a wedding could be spent on something more useful, like Literally Anything.

Which implies removing the Crown Estates, so who takes on those assets and the profits they generate?

In this day and age, not the public purse, I wager.

Yes. I don't care about Harry and Meghan, and I am sick of hearing about it on the news. The fact that Meghan's father may not be going to the wedding was headline news. Headline news.

To be honest the only Royal news that I'd really care about is if one of them is in a same-sex relationship. Maybe one day.

The frivolity of the 24 hour news media cycle and fawning over the royals notwithstanding, Markle's father's decision was sudden, unexpected, related (in some manner) to media pressure and some peculiar family dynamics, and Megan herself was deeply upset by the development.
It was certainly newsworthy.

The BBC news website also seems to think Kristen Stewart not wearing shoes is a major news item.

The BBC news website has turned to shit over the last year, I wish it would go back to being a hard news website.

You are wrong to assume that is where I was looking.

It was on the front page of the news website, in the headlines, when I posted. Also one of the stories on the BBC red button news on TV.

It has certainly gone downmarket in a lot of its content with more emphasis on what's "trending" and random people (usually a barely-concealed puff-piece for how great some minority or other is, or the "hidden story" on an event from someone who wasn't remotely important) telling their personal stories. It's partly a change in volume of stories but also a change in presentation as some of it is simply the less "newsy" things being promoted on the front page whereas before you'd have to go looking for them.

Not sure of the reasons for the change. BBC doesn't show adverts domestically (most of the audience, I'd presume) so the clickbait motivator that's dumbed down a lot of sites wouldn't seem to be in play quite so strongly.

Who reads the front page these days anyway.

The reception outside my work has a stack of Manchester Evening News' every morning when I come in. I'm keeping a running tally of how long it's been since the headline was, in any way, positive news.

To date it's been 3 weeks and 4 days. I started counting 3 weeks and 4 days ago.*

Scratch the marketing surface off and you'll find some actual content underneath. But as with all news, don't take it on face value.

*Though I suppose in the interest of full disclosure, I have missed a couple days here and there.

Didn't see anything like that when I looked earlier. At 0843 the lead story was the North Korea thing.

One man one paper, all ventures must be put under one paper name and merged. Ban corporations having stakes in more than one paper, allow a grace period for them to make arrangements to end their current shit. Guaranteed right of reply without editorializing to the extent the meaning of the reply changes significantly (Lawsuit worthy if they do), including for groups talked about (A representative of a group that is aligned to the group discussed can demand right of reply on their behalf, etc.)

So the mail can do its shit, and then has to print replies from the people they bitched about for all their readers to read next time. So does the guardian and its bullshit, etc.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

So the East Coast Main Line is being re-nationalised again.

Can't we just keep it like that given that it generated a net profit for the treasury last time?

I do firmly believe that it is in the public interest to keep transportation like rail in the public sector.

Since privatization, investment has gone up nine-fold, from £698m in 1994–95 to £6.84bn in 2013–14. However, reliability and punctuality has not improved at all during that time, staying at around 90%. Ergo, British Rail offered far better value for money in terms of cost to maintain reliability and punctuality.
