I have visions of the Orc Bombardier from one of the LotR movies, only "Brexit" has been superimposed over its mask. The arrows fired against it are variously labelled "Article 50 bill" or "the LibDems", then he dives into the sapper tunnel of explosives which has been labelled "stable British government and economy" and then the wall explodes above him.

Like this.

The new Tenner is unveiled: http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknote ... newten.pdf

I don't know if any other central bank uses tallow. However, it is irrelevant to me, due to having no dietary preferences.

Why do I keep thinking of India, in about 1857, whenever I hear about these new notes?

Not sure if it is because the ₹10 note happens to be the same colour as the £10?

Money is not for eating unless it's one of those Christmas chocolate coins, which I believe aren't legal tender even in the leprechaun kingdom - I'll await Iffy's confirmation. Any whingers should also note that the BoE has said the only economic alternative would be palm oil, whose supply chain is much more environmentally destructive. It's almost as though signalling virtue is more important for these people than the environment itself ;)

I can confirm that the Leprechaun Kingdom uses the Minoan Tala (£12.61) and Swiss Francs (£1.24). :p

It's an open question, as no one's yet been able to keep them from being eaten long enough to try and spend them.

Except the amount of palm oil would be comparable to the amount of tallow, infinitesimally small for the entire production run, and therefore has non realistic impact on the palm oil issue.

IIRC, the BoE pointed out it would be uneconomical to withdraw and replace the circulating £5 note, but the £10 does not contain tallow (and therefore presumably contains palm oil) and future £5 runs will also replace tallow with palm oil.

Dunno about all of that but the objections to both are paper thin (ha!) - the point is that the palm oil is marginally worse in principle. Still, with all the pandering I suspect the next controversy will be that the new £1 coin contains the tears of cuddly Chinese bear-like creatures.

I agree that the furore over tallow in the £5 note was overblown, but that the BoE responded in a manner that was perfectly amicable to all parties.
IIRC it was calculated the amount of tallow in all notes in circulation amounted to one half of one cow. That's not a lot of palm oil.

Entirely misread that as EACH note in circulation contains half of one cow. Which - lets be honest - would be pretty damn impressive :)

A bit late: the controversy for the new £1 coin was that a small number of them could be separated. Then, opportunistic speculators forcibly split the coins in a hope to make a quick profit on eBay.

Today's manufactured controversy about a gender gap in pay among the BBC's top stars can go do one. Newspapers don't give a damn about the poorest people in society, but this - hold the front page, truly an issue for our time. Cue the mournful minor chord piano!

Just £1 a month can help a poor oppressed female presenter afford her second yacht.

Maybe a cloying Grenfell-style charity single - Luvvie Aid?

Hopefully we're not mandated a second unfunny token woman on all comedy panel shows as penance.

On the other hand, we might get to see John McDonnell put Jacob Rees-Mogg in a headlock.
