So because the UK is leaving the EU, the EU is trying to cut the UK out of the Galileo project. And in proper response, the UK shows it will cost the EU far more then it will the UK, even though we’re still happy to cooperate on EU projects.

This is clear evidence of how disconnected and political Brussels has become, its destruction is now in the best intrest of true European advancement, with its replacement being better then a proto federal EU based on American ideals.

i mean, i agree you with you on the first part. but we need to realize that science will never get away from politics, and indeed, the idea that there is a pure objective science that is separate from politics is probably a flawed one.
ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

Doesn’t mean I have to like it. Ah, whatever politics get us more science is one I can get behind. So let the EU block the UKs access, more science for everyone!

I think a united Europe should be more cooperation based on economic and technological advancement rather then political ideologies and centeralised government.

How quickly people forget how the Scottish were threatened by the rest of the UK when they had their referendum. No use of the pound, transferring portion of national debt, trying to keep hold of oil fields, etc. And now they're getting upset when the EU behaves in the same way.

It's amusing.

The Scottish weren't threatened with anything. Apart from, debatably, lack of a Scottish share of British defence assets.

Scotland was not denied use of the Pound Sterling. Nobody can deny Scotland doing that. But the Bank of England must decide its monetary policy on the basis of its constituency - that being rUK. Nothing stops Scotland becoming a Zimbabwe or a Kosovo and accepting US Dollars and Euros respectively. That doesn't mean that the Federal Reserve or the ECB will give a shit about Zimbabwean, Kosovar or Scottish needs when setting monetary policy, or accepting their own printed currency as legal tender. Scotland wanted to retain the pound and still print the pound. Why should they? Should Greece keep printing the Euro after it leaves the EU? Why would anyone accept Greek euros if they're not legal tender outside of North Korea?

Of course Scotland should get a portion of national debt. It was a disproportionate reason of why Britain had a large deficit in the first place, given that Scotland still has the biggest budget deficit in Europe at 12% and also has by far the highest public spending per capita. Arguing like Scotland leaves scot-free as a default option is like saying the UK should leave the EU without paying a penny. Which, given your general political views, is something you probably disagree with. In which case you'd be hypocritical.

Nobody was arguing about the oil fields, just that Scotland should respect existing contracts set out by the British Govt through to 2040 and not interfere with the private market of mainly London-based oil giants pumping there. Which makes sense, right? After all the EU is asking for Britain to respect the obligations it signed up to through to 2035.

Regardless, it's too late to argue about the merits of Scottish independence anyway, and I'm already tired of Brexit being re-run let alone adding Scotland to the picture.

The point is, the EU is quite overtly displaying hatred and cutting its nose to spite its face. There's nothing logical about their threats.

I’m not complaining that the UK wants access, I’m showing how the EU is damaging itself to try and spite the UK. The UK is prepared to launch its own project, and recoup its costs from the EU project if the EU wants to be stupid.

We have fine science and rocketry institutions in the UK, but they ain't gonna compete with the ESA, I'll tell you that now.

Partly because that would mean spending billions, and the government will just collapse on that merit alone, and partly because it's the literal "well I'm gonna have my own space programme with blackjack and hookers" bullshit from the Brexit-maddened hard-right fucks who don't give two shits about science.

These people were granted indefinite leave to remain. When they arrived, as Commonwealth citizens, they were considered British nationals. Why bother applying for "citizenship" when you're already considered one?
Then twenty years later, successive governments start changing the definitions amid anti-immigrant backlashes. Twenty years after that, the government changes the definition of "british national" again, but hey, they're honouring the indefinite leave to remain.

And twenty years after that, the government destroys most if not all of the records that validate your entry to the UK, set up intentionally impossible standards for evidence to qualify for "proof of residence", rescind the citizenship of your children and try to deport you. Oh, and in the meantime, the cost of receiving British citizenship has risen to £2000 fucking pounds for some reason.

what?

Imperializt Russia wrote:These people were granted indefinite leave to remain. When they arrived, as Commonwealth citizens, they were considered British nationals.

by whom?

not by the home office, the parliament, any act of parliament, the government, or literally anything else ever

Imperializt Russia wrote: Why bother applying for "citizenship" when you're already considered one?

because they weren't

indefinite leave to remain =/= citizenship

Imperializt Russia wrote:Then twenty years later, successive governments start changing the definitions amid anti-immigrant backlashes.

these definitions have been unchanged since 1914. those who came here before 1983 had right of abode, those who came after had leave to enter. all of them have indefinite leave to remain.

Imperializt Russia wrote: Twenty years after that, the government changes the definition of "british national" again,

"british national" is not a legal term and absolutely never has been. "british nationality" is a different thing that is synonymous with citizenship, but has never been a legal term of itself either.

It's 1300, first of all, and secondly, the fees have been waived for commonwealth residents who arrived from the caribbean between 1948 and 1983 right down to 65 pence postage stamp.

So looks like the Trump State Visit is going ahead in July.

I can't wait to see how the government enforces his "ban protests" demand. >:(

not by the home office, the parliament, any act of parliament, the government, or literally anything else ever

Commonwealth citizens have the right of abode in this country pursuant to section 2(1)(b) of the Immigration Act 1971, and subsection (2) provides that any Commonwealth citizen who qualifies for the right of abode under the Act should be treated as a British citizen for the purposes of that Act. Section 11(1)(b) of the British Nationality Act 1981 declares that anyone who had the right of abode by virtue of the Immigration Act at the time the BNA 1981 came into force, and who was a citizen of the UK or colonies, are British citizens

Those who came on the Empire Windrush are obviously British citizens. By act of Parliament no less.

Let's have a look at an itinerary:

He won't be getting an audience with the Queen. Potentially a brief meeting with whichever royal draws the short straw (my money is on Harry)

He has vested interests in Scotland, notably two golf courses. My bet is on Turnberry, it's more prestigious and doesn't have the stink of the sand dune conservation/wind turbine farce hanging around it. (and we may even see the famous but rather blunt "Trump is a C**t" protest sign again)

Whilst in Scotland he may want to speak to local government, I wonder how long it will take for some of them to go back on their word about "dinghy the donald"...

Most likely he'll be couch surfing at Farages place, so will likely get a tour of local pubs to drink a proper pint or two.

A colossal protest in London will mark his visit to Downing street, where an icy conversation will take place over the taking of toast and English tea with May tragically unable to offer bad quality coffee to the american.

Whereupon, the trip concluded, he'll arrive at Heathrow to board Air Force 1 to find his flight delayed and baggage lost somewhere in Terminal 5.
