Today is a good day for Sainsbury's own brand continental-style lager.

WARNING: Sad case alert

Alfie Evans is a baby with an unknown degenerative brain condition. a Judge of the Family Division of the High Court ruled that it would be lawful for the Alder Hey hospital to withdraw life support from him. It seems that his parents vehemently disagree, and have tried every avenue possible to keep him alive. This is the latest result, on a renewed application to the Supreme Court (the first time was a straightforward appeal against the initial order, this time is an appeal against a refusal of an application for habeas corpus). The Supreme Court has refused permission to appeal. The Order and reasons are here: https://www.supremecourt.uk/docs/in-the ... -order.pdf

I'm still trying to figure out how cutting hair is actual bodily harm. Given that consent is no defence against an ABH or GBH charge, why isn't every barber and hairdresser in the nation up on charges?

because it actually totally is a defence if 1) it's a foreseeable consequence of a legal activity 2) said activity is socially sanctioned by the body that gets to decide what is and is not socially sanctioned

My complaint is that the whole thing is arbitrary. Consent is a valid defence sometimes and not others.

And that ass carving case was clearly a Ds relationship. I'd lay money that they were wealthy and got a pass on it.

and it also turns out that what is and is not socially sanctioned is massively arbitrary and now we have a literal morality police whoops

I've not had supermarket own brand continental style lager in years...

The little bottles from Tesco used to be amazing for hot days. Pretty strong, about a fiver for 24 bottles and the bottles were small enough that they were gone before they got warm. Perfect summer drinking....

I know what I'm doing tomorrow.

this goes into some decent depth. i guess it's the outline of a judge struggling with how hard it is to draw lines in this area but ultimately coming to the conclusion that bad things are bad and sex is the bad thing. (note that common law jurisdictions are all in bed with each other)

Alternatively, it's also Shakespeare's birthday. Or at least we think it is (it's not actually written down anywhere).

If Richard I hadn't been 100000000% ERECT about all things military he wouldn't have nicked the cult of Goerge off the Geonoans, and Edward the Confessor would still be our patron saint. Still kind of a weird choice, but at least he was actually English.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.
