That's nice, but I want to see a LOT OF MONEY going to space programs before I'll acknowledge Trump or the Republicans are doing good "work on supporting space travel".

When speaking of government doing things, "work" means spending money, not talk. Not restructuring agencies. Not "cutting regulations" or "encouraging investment" in some magical way not involving the government spending any money. It may include those things, but it's empty promises if there is no money being spent.

Not talking about a Mars mission, but spending money on it (and don't pretend it will be cheap). Not talking about how great commercial space is, but spending money on it (not a contradiction btw: government contracts to launch and maintain stuff will remain a major part of the demand necessary for private companies to make profit in space). And most importantly, because commercial space won't do it, spending money on science missions in space.

If you calm down for a moment, think about the implications.

Democrats and Republicans both throw money at the military like it's going out of style. Putting space under the military probably means space exploration would get a hell of a lot more funding.

A mission to Mars.

Also a Death Star moon base.

A new branch? That will mean some new regulations, no?

OK, US Space Command, it'll be great. But remember the two-for-one rule: Trump will have to abolish two of the other four branches. Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine Corp. Well Marines are obviously the weakest link, but picking which of the others to terminate ... that's tricky.

I say air force. Navy can handle air patrol.

Except it wouldn't be "exploration" really would it? I also don't see a lot of increase in what I call science, under cover of military secrecy.

However there would be plenty of technology and spinoffs, better launch systems (better not necessarily including cheaper), maybe the military would also give higher priority to asteroid defense than currently.

Yeah, it sort of works as an idea, though it's not in any way a good value-for-money way of doing space.

I mentioned asteroid defense, well it took me less than a minute to change my mind on that. I don't want the US military playing with asteroids, as "defense against asteroids" could easily turn into "offense with asteroids".
