Except it wouldn't be "exploration" really would it? I also don't see a lot of increase in what I call science, under cover of military secrecy.

Yeah, it sort of works as an idea, though it's not in any way a good value-for-money way of doing space.

You think? Orbital mechanics are complicated, but they're very well understood and precisely predictable.

If the US does it, Russia and China can do it too, and they'll feel obliged to in self defense. So you get another layer of MAD on top of the nuclear MAD, and all that money the US has spent on missile defense is wasted. THAAD won't stop an asteroid.

I have a feeling that this new branch will be a lot like NOAA and the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. Like those two it will probably be an officer only branch.
