The origins of something don't inherently make the idea bad, to be fair.

Doesn't make it as god idea either. Lobotomies where intended to help the patients recover from mental illnesses. Doesn't mean they're a valid medical procedure.

That was more an expression of surprise that it was that way, and a request for information about exactly how they're structured to have that effect.

Generally the biggest way they're biased against the poor and whatnot is due to cost, which is where a lot of gun control measures here really hurt the poor. My state for example made universal background checks law in 2014, and I initially supported it until I realized how expensive it was going to become to follow said law. There's no cheap home based dealers near me so when I buy a gun online I have to ship it to a store nearby, I then have to drive half an hour to the store to pay $50 (on top of the shipping and actual cost of the gun) for them to perform a background check and then I have to drive half an hour home. Needless to say I no longer follow said law because it would become exceedingly expensive.

Those costs add up quickly, and if you're living in the inner city paycheck to paycheck you can't really afford to dish out all that extra money. Some states take it a step further by requiring things like FOID cards that cost another $10 to get. In New York you need to pay $140 to just get a permit for a shotgun or rifle and handguns are nigh impossible for the plebs to get and carry.

Then there's all the examples of gun controllers going after and trying to ban cheap handguns (Saturday Night Specials) that were the preferred self defense items of low income Americans in inner city areas. Then you have the NFA where FDR and co. tried to tax gun ownership out of existence etc etc.

While gun control here was initially started on racial grounds it really seems like it's shifted more towards classism. Whether directly or indirectly most of the proposals that gun controllers throw around do seem to stack costs up pretty quickly and that hurts the poor who arguably need guns more than anyone else.

Considering a lot of minorities are poor, I would still say that gun control is just as racist as it is classist.

I would say that this is less true in western Europe where there wasn't a near century of segregation.

Americans on the internet can sometimes seem a shade self-obsessed, it is true.

Catochristoferson wrote:Still waiting for the liberals to defend gun control, despite the racist origins of it.

Moreover, to claim that the first urging of gun control was then (Reagan's time) is dubious. Even if it were, to think that modern left-wing Americans' cause of gun regulation is connected to racism, not simply death tolls, is singularly tendentious.

No, he is not dead, though he is still in the hospital. The details are a bit cloudy but he will hopefully make a smooth recovery and continue his duties to his constituents.
